Will they be swapping more than baskets? The two teams have exchanged Vince Carter trade proposals over the past few days, league sources told ESPN.com Tuesday. Currently the teams are haggling over what the Nets will get in return for Carter. Sources say the Rockets have been pushing a trade that sends Tracy McGrady to the Nets for Carter and Trenton Hassell. However, the Nets are balking at taking back McGrady's contract. McGrady is slated to make $22 million during the 2009-10 season. However, McGrady's contract comes off the books in the summer of 2010. The deal would save the Nets roughly $21 million over the life of Carter's contract. The Nets would then have around $30 million in cap room to use in a stellar free-agent market. Sources say the Nets are also concerned about McGrady's health. McGrady has already missed 18 games this year. The Houston Chronicle reported on Tuesday that McGrady missed Monday's practice and will not play against the Nets as he prepares to seek more opinions on his problematic left knee. The Nets have countered with a proposal that would send Carter and Josh Boone to the Nets for a combination of Ron Artest, Shane Battier, Luther Head and Carl Landry. The Nets proposal is both financially and talent related. The contracts of Artest and Head expire this summer, clearing around $8 million off the team's cap in the summer of 2009. Sources say the team is looking for immediate cap relief in any deal for Carter. However, management doesn't want to completely gut the team and believes that Battier and Landry could play important roles in the future. At this point sources say that the ball is in the Rockets' court. As of Tuesday afternoon, the Rockets were still mulling over the Nets' proposal. While the Rockets have strong interest in Carter, they may be reluctant to take on the remaining two years and $37 million left on his contract if they can't move McGrady as part of the transaction. They would also lose two valuable pieces for them in Battier and Landry. Is Carter good enough to make up for their losses? The Rockets aren't the only team the Nets have spoken with concerning Carter. The Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers have all shown interest, though it sounds like the Rockets deal has the highest probability of happening. The Rockets have been shopping McGrady hard over the past month to a number of teams but have struggled to find takers given his injury history and contract.

Possibly. It just seems like the Vince/Hassel-for-McGrady package would be their worst case scenario. I mean, let's look at this logically. There's probably a 50% chance T-Mac is done for the year and needs the dreaded microfracture surgery. That means there's a 25% chance he'll never play another game in the NBA, that he'll be working for TNT by the end of next year and that he never suits up a game for the Nets. That's a tough sell whenever you're a possible playoff team and you just traded away your still productive and second best player for an expiring contract.
Would any of you do it if they threw in Yi. Can't see Morey doing this deal without getting a prospect back, giving them Landry gives them too many young PFs (Yi, Landry and Anderson).
If this is true... I dont think that we would give up Battier in this deal. I think the Nets are asking for more than they can get hoping we would relent on the TMac demands and give up Artest, Head, and Landry. But if the Nets want some youth in the deal to take on Tmac, then by all means give up Landry along with TMac for Carter and Boone.
I've been thinking about this too. I guess we'll see if Tracy comes back to practice on Friday "healed".
Who knows what stage we're at in the soap opera. My question: when does the climax come? When does it all end and we start focusing on basketball again? As anxious as I am for a move to be made and the deadline to pass, finding out T-Mac's situation and future with the team is paramount before we do anything. If he needs microfracture surgery and essentially ends his career with the Rockets, how do we go about both getting value for his expiring deal and replacing him? An example of this would be the Gordon/Hughes rumor from yesterday -- Gordon as the "replacement" and Hughes for "value" as an expiring contract. This deal or the Carter/Hassell deal is the type of deal I would target if he's done.
McGrady + Battier for Carter + Simmons Simmons is as good a 3pt. shooter as Shane and his huge contract expires in 2010 like T-Mac. I'd throw in Head's expiring contract for Boone's if needed. I would definitely trade Artest before Battier, and I would NOT want to take back Simmons. McGrady + Artest for Carter + Simmons + Boone? Hmmm...
Wow, Rox management are trying hard to move Mcgrady but T-Mac does not want to go away. So the drama continues.
And T-Mac drama surprises you why? That's all it has been for years now, from his back, to his knee, to his comments, that's all i know of Tracy now. Oh to bring back the 13 points in 35 seconds against San Antonio days.......
What surprises me is the fact that Rox managament has finally seen the light. And T-mac trying hard not to be traded.
geeze this is a terrible trade for us. We NEED to keep McGrady cause he will be a more valuable in the offseason. If we trade him and lose Artest later in the offseason then it'll be a ****ing waste. Trade ARTEST for Carter.
Looks to me as if management and coaching staff were fed up with T-Mac months ago. T-Mac probably heard through his cousin Vince who heard from his agent that the rockets were offering T-Mac for him and then T-Mac comes up with the second opinions saga about a potential microfractive surgery. Management has really said nothing about that injury. This second opinion stuff while in Vegas may be a way of T-Mac trying to botch any potential trade that gets him out of Houston and especially to a bottom dweller like the Nets.
