[Bergen Record] Three Texas Teams interested in Vince Carter

The Nets saw what life without Vince Carter is like Sunday in Orlando, Fla. It wasn't pretty and probably should give management pause if it's considering trading Carter.

The Nets lost by 17 points with Carter out with a strained right elbow. He's expected back tonight against the Spurs in what could be his final home game as a Net.

After tonight, the All-Star break begins for the Nets. They resume their schedule next week at Houston and Dallas in advance of the Feb. 19 trade deadline. The three Texas teams are among those interested in Carter, according to league sources.

The Cavaliers are another team that thinks Carter could help them get over the top. The Nets have resisted dealing Carter to Cleveland for a package that includes Wally Szczerbiak and probably wouldn't send him to an East team.

The Mavericks' interest is compelling because Jason Kidd is in Dallas and asked to be traded last year in part because of Carter. Jerry Stackhouse likely would be involved.

However, all signs are pointing to the Nets keeping Carter and seeing what the off-season brings. The Nets have a chance to make the playoffs, which they won't do without Carter. But they have to listen and talk when teams call.

"There's always a market for extraordinary players," Nets president Rod Thorn said Monday. [To trade Carter] it would take something that we felt very strongly would make us better in the future or something that would make us better right now."

Thorn said the Nets have neither on their plate. But it's still early.

Trade talks heat up this weekend when NBA executives converge in Phoenix for the All-Star festivities.

Carter is one of many big-name players being discussed. Others are Chris Bosh, Tyson Chandler, Shawn Marion, Shaquille O'Neal, Jermaine O'Neal and Amare Stoudemire.

The Nets have spoken to Phoenix about Stoudemire, but may not have what it takes to get the All-Star power forward, even with a package that includes Yi Jianlian Ryan Anderson, Bobby Simmons and a No. 1 pick. Many teams are in the mix for Stoudemire, including the Pistons and Heat.

It should be an active trade deadline throughout the league, but especially for the Nets, who have talented young players, players with attractive contracts, three first-round picks in the next two years and veterans who can help contenders.

"We've had a lot of conversations," Thorn said. "Some that we've initiated, some that other teams initiated. But we don't have anything right now."

Carter is having one of his better all-around seasons. He's provided leadership for his young team and makes everyone around him better. That's why it may be the time to strike for the Nets – when Carter's trade value is high. But the Nets' fan base wouldn't be happy.

How about TMac and Landry for VCarter, Yi and Sean Williams? The Nets might do it because it gives them major flexibility for the LeBron sweepstakes, especially if they can resign TMac for a big discount, or if not, renounce him.

Won't we be getting back T-Mac if we get Carter?

The only problem is Carter is 32 now and his contract is too long.

Carter is worth more than both of them combined. Have you watched the guy play this season?
Carter >>>>>>>>>>> T-Mac at this point.

    LINK

    McGrady (2 years)
    Artest (expiring)
    Head (expiring)

    for

Carter (4 years, 4th is team option)
    Simmons (2 years)
Dooling (3 years, less than $4 mil per)

Why the Rockets do it: Gives us about the best "star" player (Carter) we can probably hope for given what we have to deal with, a solid SF who can shoot the 3 very well in Simmons, and an upgrade to Head in Dooling.

Why the Nets do it: Head is expiring, Artest is expiring, and the Nets get out of Carter's 4 year deal, Dooling's 3 year deal for the 2010 LeBron/Wade/Bosh sweepstakes. Dooling is playing very well of late, so they may insist on swapping him for Najera (4 years) but I still do the deal.

After this season Carter's contract lasts for 2 more season plus a non-guaranteed year. That's a relatively short contract.

Yep, and McGrady's 2 years is about 44.5 million while Carter's 3 years is 48.8 million, so the total difference is very small. But it's still an attractive exchange to the Nets because they can get out a year early.

McGrady + Head for Carter + Slowmile "Swift"

Slowmile's contract is up this year. So that's a negative for NJ. Tmac's contract is up in a year and Carter's continues on another year or two. So that's a bigger plus for NJ.

Hell, McGrady might even show up and play next year---if he wants another NBA contract, which I sometimes wonder if he really does.

Maybe if this is truly being discussed, it has to do with the "high leverage moments concept" that Daryl was talking about. Carter seems to rank pretty high this year in "clutch stats", scoring well and at a high percentage.

Carter is defintely worth a look. Not sure what the trade would be though.

It's either McGrady straight up,like CCR says, with maybe filler swap so NJ can get out under his contract early as Vince isn't necessarily going to attract LBJ their anyways.

Or it could be Artest and friends so that they get out even earlier.

Desperate is a good word. Probably for the best ... this team looks pretty hopeless right now.

Morey also thinks about 2010. Getting rid of Tmac and bringing in VC doesn't make us the champion anyway this year. So why give up your future by sending Tmac's contract away? The best way to cure the chemistry is packing Artest and Battier. The salary matches. Wafer gets plenty of play time.
