The Texans have fired defensive coordinator Richard Smith, defensive backs coach Jon Hoke and defensive line coach Jethro Franklin.

Smith, who was under fire from fans and media this season, was the coordinator during Gary Kubiak's first three seasons.

Kubiak is expected to conduct a search for Smith's replacement. Because the Texans have personnel to fit a 4-3 scheme as opposed to the 3-4 they played under Dom Capers, The new coordinator will be expected to play the same defense.

Kubiak may want to hire an expericenced coordinator with a proven track record. Frank Bush, senior defensive assistand the last two seasons, could be one of the candidates. When Kubiak was hired, Bush was his first choice as coordinator, but Arizona would not let Bush out of his contract.

Hoke had been with the Texans since their inception in 2002. This season, Hoke shared the coaching duties with Ray Rhodes, who was hired as assistand defensive backs coach. Rhodes, who earned five Super Bowl rings as an assistant coach during his distinguished career, coached the safeties. Kubiak said Monday that Rhodes will return for a second season with the Texans.

Franklin was hired in 2007 to help develop defensive end Mario Williams. He was originally drafted by the Oilers as a defensive tackle out of Fresno State. He made his mark as a defensive line coach with Green Bay in the NFL and USC in college.

The Texans finished 8-8 this season and ranked 27th in points allowed. They were 22nd in defense, including 23rd against the run and 17th against the pass.

Excellent! I was worried that the 5-1 finish would keep them from cleaning house on the defensive front. I guess that wasn't the case....

So, why isn't Ray Rhodes just promoted to D-coordinator?

my understanding is Rhodes has health concerns that keep him from seeking that position.

Great move. There a lot of good defensive coaches out on the market right now like Rob Marinelli, Romeo Carnell, Eric Mangini, Mike Nolan, and Gregg Williams. I would be happy with any of them. I just hope he doesn't get anybody from Denver because their defense is worse than the Texans. Carnell, Mangini, and Nolan run 3-4 defenses so I don't if they would be a fit. I wouldn't mind changing to a 3-4 defense. Mario Williams could play on any defense as a end because of size, power, and speed. Amobi Okoye could play other end spot. Diles and Ryans could be your inside backers. You would need to find a nose guard and two pass rushers on the outside though. I am just happy they got rid of Richard Smith.

I think he is calling up Albert Haynesworth trying to convince him he should drop back into coverage instead of rushing the QB.

This is great news.

Looks like the Texans are committed to truly becoming a great team. The one thing holding this team back was the defense, and they're going all out to fix that problem.
