Those of you who think he could have remained on the team, please explain. I don't get it.

Unbelievable that he would say something like that...given he has black teammates. Just dumb. He got what he deserved.

If he said that the punishment is not harsh enough. There ought to be more severe pubishment. Besides being racist, it's basically a death threat and to our president no less.

Any reasonable person would realize that he and a group of hunters are not going to hunt down the president. We follow the prudent man rule here in America. It was not a true death threat.

With that being said, what a r****d. He deserved getting booted not just for the racism, but for sheer stupidity. You could be the most racist person in the world and think you are completely justified in your racism, and know better than to put that on your facebook. People that dumb should have their balls snipped so they can't breed.

    I do.

They are really huge Longhorn fans or are voting that way to mess with the statistics.

I hear people say all the time that a person who made ignorant offensive comments isn't racist, they just said something stupid.

But, if that's the case, how do you know if someone's "really" racist?

Racist or not its in your best interest to apologize and attempt to appear as sincere as possible.

So, obviously there's no real way to know for sure if someone's racist...but comments like those are probably the best indicator we have.

I think the only way you can defend a racist statement with the "said something stupid" defense is when it is a suppossedly humorous racial stereotype.

If he would have come out and said "I heard Obama's putting a watermelon patch in the back of the white house" or something stupid like that, ok, you might be able to get away with that excuse.

When you have a person talk about killing a president, though obviously joking, and then using the one word that will offend more people than any other word, there is no excuse that can be made up to back him.

I heard on the radio that it was not the N-word but I think the C word something close to Racoon.

I voted that the coaches did the right thing, but I also think that the punishment is too severe and that the kid is truly sorry.

The thing is that Texas football is entrenched deeply in the politics of America and they cannot afford to have ANY racial problems associated with the university.

I can see how a 21 year old kid could come out and say something dumb like that and not really mean it. Is that as bad as some of the other things that players have done and been less severely punished? Probably not, but you can't have the racism stigma attached to your university.

There was an article today in the Austin paper talking about the players' response to the dismissal. It was talking about players black and white being disappointed at the dismissal and that they had reached out to support him.

Not surprising, but what you probably won't ever hear about are the black players that wanted to beat the snot out of him.

You don't think he thought it was funny?

IMO the taste in jokes has nothing to do with racism. It's mostly intent but we don't know him, we can't judge his intentions. All we know is that he's some football player (backup center?) for UT named Buck who made some offensive comments.

I'm definitely not down with any restrictions on the first amendment but i love the idea of universities and private organizations not condoning this crap.

I actually wouldn't have cut the kid...I would reprimand him and maybe suspension, but not kick him off the team. It wasn't a crime what he did...I see athletes do far worse things than him and not get suspended. Not saying it is right, but I think it is something he could've worked through, unlike committing a felony where a person could actually go to jail or doing things that are very detrimental to team. On Facebook, it is a public forum, but it is somewhat private at the same time (at least in the context of the school acting) as disciplinary.

With all due respect, sir, the entire post is about right, but in this here above piece I think you're contradicting yourself. They either didn't do the right thing, or they did. The punishment is either right, or it isn't. But can't be both.

Disagree...that kind of statement, especially when made in a public arena like Facebook, is the type of statement that would (and should) warrant jail time, just like making jokes about bombs at an airport in a post 9/11 world would get you jail time. He made a death threat AND used a racial slur. Joking or not, I think he should be thankful that all he got was a dismissal from the team.
