i was watching food channel and they talked about some place called casino el camino. they have some beast burgers and stuff
Rent a boat or jet skis on Lake Travis Chill out at Zilker Park and cool off with a swim at Barton Springs Check out the view at Mount Bonnell Hamilton Pool Walk down South Congress and grab a slice at Homeslice or a rita at Guero's Capital Building Check out the UT campus Run along Town Lake downtown Party on 6th/West 6th/4th/5th St downtown - try Six, Red Fez, J Black's, The Ranch, Spill, or Aquarium depending on what your tastes are Lunch/Happy Hour at Hula Hut on Lake Austin BBQ: The Salt Lick in Driftwood (BYOB) Rudy's The County Line Kreuz's Mkt in Luling OR Southside Mkt in Elgin Tex-Mex: Trudy's Guero's Chuy's Z-Tejas Curra's Late Night: Magnolia Cafe Kerbey Lane Starseeds Cafe
Hit Barton Springs for the afternoon then head to one of the restaurants on Barton Springs for drinks. You have to check the springs right now -- 100+ weather and cool crystal clear spring water. One of the Lake Travis parks is a can't miss -- good ol' Tom Hughes Park is a great mellow spot or Pace Pend if you don't mind a bit longer drive -- then on to Oasis for the evening. Hamilton's Pool for the most amazing grotto in Central Texas + you guessed it an incredible pool for swimming in the heat. Then on to a BBQ joint in the area for your dinner and drinks.
Winner Winner, Brisket Dinner emphasis on Rudy's BBQ, Ginger Man (brewpub), Barton Springs Pool, HomeSlice Pizza, Moonshine (dinner), South Congress Cafe (brunch), Guero's (tacos), El Chilito's (tacos), Austin Java (better than Magnolia and Kerbey IMO), watch the bats on Congress, P.Terry's Burger Stand (our version of In-N-Out but better)... avoid Kerbey like the plague - slow service, mediocre food compared to Magnolia and Austin Java go to 6th street and see Leslie. my favorite bars downtown are Fado, Ginger Man, Maggie Mae's, Saba, Halcyon... Aquarium and Library are just too full and loud, but cheap.
I'll never eat at Austin Java again. Especially the one on Barton Springs. The place is disgusting. Dirty silverware and cups. My wife got sick within minutes of eating there. Not to mention the food sucks. If you're on Barton Springs, Chuy's or Shady Grove is it.
Ginger Man Austin >> Ginger Man Houston There's this nice Caribbean fusion restaurant on 4th called Saba.
wow, rough times. that sucks. i've never been disappointed with austin java, and i'm pretty picky. i also don't like chuy's... seems like everything is cooked in the same generic oil... nothing tastes fresh like austin java. shady grove is meh to me...
What is your budget? There are some great restaurants in Austin - not too expensive but not cheap either. Mexican - Fonde San Miguel Steak - Flemings, Sullivans Steak and Seafood - Eddie V's Cajun - Gumbos Brazillian steak - Fogo da Chow (sp?) BBQ - Salt Lick Driftwood If you are into wine, go out to driftwood vineyards, get a bottle, watch the sunset and then head over to Mandolas and eat at their new sicilian cafe.... DD
P Terry's is a lot like In N Out, but there's a Whataburger down the street. And I think I've made my Whataburger fairly clear. I hear that Gingerman is going to be closing soon. As far as Kerbey, the older location on 38th is much better than the one on Guadalupe. Aquarium is where we used to start off, for cheap drinks and $5.50 jaeger bombs, before heading out someplace nicer. The 4th Street places that you referenced are a little more laid back.
Man, I went to Barton Springs Pool a few weeks ago - that wasn't 'cool'. That water was more like ice cold. Still, a pretty awesome place.
Clay Pit Grill and Curry House has good Indian food (and I don't even like Indian). http://www.claypit.com Threadgill's - Just good home cookin'. Go to the original location, if possible. Also a good place to catch some bands. http://www.threadgills.com/ Chez Zee - Great place for brunch. http://www.chez-zee.com/ Momo's - One of my favorite live music venues, just above Katz's Deli (also very good). http://www.momosclub.com/ Nutty Brown Cafe - Was a lot more fun before it got so big, but still a great place to have a 'rita and catch some tunes. http://www.nuttybrown.com/
The list starts and ends with the campus-based location of Trudy's and their Mexican Martinis. I am going to Austin this weekend and plan to complete the task I was never able to do in college - the Trudy's Trifecta (even though there are now 4 locations in Austin - I don't think I could drink 8 mexican martinis in one night)
