Anyone in a career in consulting or work for any of the major firms? (Bain, BCG, Accenture, Deloitte, etc)

I'm looking to go that way but trying to figure out what angle to approach it from. I know I'm good with it, and would be good with it, i already do it part time on my own time here at a small business I work for currently. Trying to move up to a major firm to meet bigger fish, get my face out there, get my linguistics out there and hopefully leapfrog from one of the Big 4 into a Fortune 300 or somethin and keep movin on.

I'm in my 5th year (changed majors) here at Univ. of Ill-Chicago, and the job fair for consulting firms/etc is in October, but I'm trying to plan ahead and get my stuff together to even try and jump in on advance. My goal is get into a firm by end of this year, ride out a year, graduate, then ride out another year, get into an MBA program and have consulting firm pay part of it.

    Any advice?

I definitely recommend going to the career fairs.

I actually work for a consulting firm here in Chicago as well (Navigant Consulting).

I was actually looking at Navigant too. They do alot of work with defense related consulting right?

I've got the career fair comin up in October, and UIC doesn't usually have the best picks in terms of consulting companies coming, because UIC definitely has their heavy reputation for more of a science majors school. I'm gonna try to go to U of C's fair as well.

I'm trying to land an internship before the year's out, and preferably even before October. Any suggestions, interview tips, who to contact, how to contact, preparation, insight, anything, would be appreciated.

From my knowledge regarding consulting firms, this is what I have realised:

    1. Mckensies, BCG, Bain, Booz Allen, Mercer - these are probably the top 5 (in that order). They would require you at bare minimum to have very very high marks. Also, unlike finance firms which concentrates on commerce or finance or business students, Management consulting firms will chose people doing aeronautical engineering (a friend of mine who got into BCG) and other non commerce related degrees. This will make it much harder for you since you are competing with more people now. My friend was a university medalist for her subject (no.1 for aeronaturical engineering), which shows the level of graduates these consulting firms take.

    2. Then you have other consulting firms such as LEK, ATKearney, Cap Gemini, Deloitte, Accenture who are probably a level down (huge difference at that) which not only focus on strategic consulting but also other areas which some of the more prestigious firms dont tackle due to the lack of profitability.

My understanding is that Accenture pays pretty badily, has a bad culture apparently and works long hours. So I would advise you against accenture.

Depending on how good your marks are, you can realistically pursue any of these options. There are obviously alot more consulting firms, and if you research hard enough, you might find one or two boutique that gives you alot of experience and pay pretty well too. And then you maybe able to jump ship to a bigger one after substantial experience

Whenever I am in the elevator with Accenture consultants, they are always looking at something on the ceiling. Not sure why. ;)

I work for a national financial consulting firm... My educational and professional background before entering this field 6 years ago had NOTHING to do with consulting... I just fell into this industry - and now I'd NEVER go back... it is fantastic.

I always made more bling as an independent. The bigger the consulting company, the bigger chunk of your pay they snatch up.

Its good to start out with a larger firm for the experience, but if your going to be doing it very long....go independent. Large corps suck *ss

Excellent point. I am 12-18 months from starting my own firm and working for myself.
