Stubbed toe then tripped in back yard feeding my dogs. I weigh a lot (around 300) and landed awkwardly when I tried to catch my balance on stubbed toe.

The middle of the toe is very purple and there is a very severe looking dark purple line across the bottom. The toe is not obviously out of line. There is a very hard swelling from the top of esp on the bottom "pad" of the toe. It is not especially sore to a gentle touch but any pressure is crazy painful.

I can walk in sort of a halting fashion.

Have tried ice and will elevate some.

It's possible that you broke it, but if past experience is correct, they can't do anything for it. It will probably swell up over night.

One of my basketball teammates broke her big toe... getting out of bed.

    Long story.

At any rate, they x-rayed it, told her to stay off of it as much as possible and that was it. They scheduled a follow up appointment to make sure there wasn't any bone fragments (I think) and to see how it was healing.

But they couldn't put a cast on it and they didn't make her wear a boot or anything.

I would still have a doctor x-ray it.

if it is broken there's nothing they can do... take some ibuprofen, tape it up to keep it straight, dont put any weight on it.

    that's pretty much it.

All you can do is elevate it, ice it, and take something strong for the pain. You might tape it up to keep it straight. That's going to hurt like hell though. Probably ought to avoid shoes for a few days, too.

You didn't break it. I did break mine once. Went to the doctor, had x-rays, the doc said, yep its broken - prescribed me some pain pills and sent me home. He said there is nothing they can do for a broken toe.

Tape it to the toe beside it for stability. You may need to get a big fluffy slipper to wear around on that foot for a while.

Go to the ER or your PCP.

How can I give you my professional opinion without seeing the toe. You'll have to take a pic and post it. Then I'll be throughly grossed out and tell you to schedule an appointment with a doctor.

Do NOT go to the ER for a possible broken toe!!! It is Friday and doctor's offices are open. Call and get an appointment with your doctor or ask for a referral to an ortho person if you feel you must.

Sorry Lil Pun, but you hit one of my hot buttons about health care in the US. ER visits are outrageously expensive and the waits are horrendus. Partly, because people use them as a doctor's office. ER's should be reserved for serious emergencys, not the flu. If you get an after hours injury, then you may need to go to an ER. But if you can wait and go to your doctor, you will save yourself tons of money and time sitting around in waiting rooms.

I had an accident a couple of years ago and ended up with a concussion. I was galloping on my horse is a field and she let out an unexpected buck, over her head I went and luckily I had on a hard hat. I really have no memory of the time after that, I was conscious, but had no memory. They called my husband and he came and took me to the med center. He was pretty freaked and stopped at the first hospital we got to -Ben Taub. He sent me in with my 6yr old son and my insurance card in hand. I'm not sure whether it was the insurance card or my telling the person at the front desk I didn't know my name, but I got to go to the head of the very long line and was having a CAT scan before my husband got back from parking the car. This was super bowl Sunday and we had a lovely time spending the whole day and evening in a ward in the Ben Taub ER. Quite an eye opening experience.

I related this story, because if you have a serious injury - an ER is the place for you. But way too many people are clogging up the system and using the ER as a Dr's office.

This probably opens up a whole other can of worms about health insurance and what people without insurance are supposed to do.
