I have a JVC DR-NV78B DVD-Recorder/VHS Combo I bought so I could record my family memories from a camcorder onto DVD about a few months back. So far, the VHS-to-DVD and CamCorder-to-DVD works well. (this is the combo player) THE PROBLEM: Since I've had it, I've played numerous DVDs, and recently I haven't been able to play back some other ones. Here's a list of some that don't play at all: Shrek the 3rd, The Incredibles, Casino Royale, and Cars among others. Another weird thing also is that it plays some DVDs I buy in the store and it doesn't play some other ones, and it plays ALL the ones I "backup" from my collection. I think that if I make a copy of one I own, and then try to play it, it does, but it won't play the original. EDIT: all those DVDs can be played on PCs, but not on the DVD-recorder. Is anyone else having the same problem with newer DVDs? yes, I legally copy my own DVDs and don't have an underground distribution ring
Fact is, the manufacturing of these items from wherever they assemble them varies GREATLY, and quite often, this will happen. I have maybe 10 different DVD players throughout the house in one form or another, and I have learned over the years that at any given time, any random DVD may or may not work in any random one of them. With these items having become so dirt cheap, quality-control is almost non-existent.
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070317160231AAO9CYG DVD drive won't read Casino Royale but will read others? My DVD rom will read about 95% of the dvd's that I insert into it, but there are some that it wont recognize as even being in the drive, like Casino Royale and Stranger than Fiction....I've noticed too that it tends to be newer dvds that it mainly has this problem on....the dvd rom drive is only like 3-4 months old and I bought it new.....anyone have a similar type problem and know how to fix it? * 11 months ago Report It jason b's Avatar by jason b Member since: May 23, 2006 Total points: 7487 (Level 5) * Add to My Contacts * Block User Best Answer - Chosen by Asker It might be something to do with copy protections (Sony Archos etc) on the dvd's and the combination of your dvd-rom. I have had this problem once with a brand new DVD but it would work in all my dvd-writers which was odd. I updated the firmware of the dvd-rom shortly afterwards and I have never had problems since. It would have been nice to know the make and model of your DVD-ROM so we could see if there are others experiencing the same problem with certain combinations of dvd-rom and disk. The problem with the copy protections is that they get updated on a regular basis and the companies really don't care if the dvd's can't be read on some computers. If it can't be read on a computer it can't be copied. There is a small chance that the problem could be something else other than the disk or firmware i.e. a faulty drive, dirty lens, faulty IDE controller or cable etc. P.S. Both Stranger Than Fiction and Casino Royale are Sony pictures releases so you can bet that the disks are protected with Sony Archos which might be causing the problem.
I would assume it was some sort of copy-protection issue, as well (which could be why the problem disappears on your backed-up copies), even though Tin Man isn't a SONY issue.
