So, I'm at my computer, a Toshiba laptop, when there's a sudden thunderclap/lightning strike nearby. My laptop immediately tells me that there's an unrecognized USB device. The mouse isn't moving so I figure that's what it meant. I get another USB mouse and it doesn't work either. So I do a system restore (always first resort) and nothing. Then I realize my external hard drive isn't showing up. Both devices are able to get power from the computer but neither shows up. Then I realize that despite being plugged in, the laptop is running off of the battery.

Is there anything I can do or do I just have to bite the bullet and take in somewhere?

    No surge protector I'd guess?

That's what pisses me off. It was plugged into a surge protector. I'm sure the laptop can be fixed but I think my external hard drive is gone. Nothing that can't be replaced but it's going to suck and be time consuming and I'm not spending $500 on a data retrieval service.

Acutally, maybe I can get Belkin to pay for it since they made my surge protectore. They put a Lifetime $75,000 Connected Equipment Warranty on their current line and I'm pretty sure mine has something similar.

You have the paperwork? The warranty or whatever?

I hope you can claim that. That would rock.

Still, it stinks to have to deal with it for now...
