Seems like mostly repeated information, but this seems to be the first time the Chron has acknowledge that Yao has a torn labrum in his shoulder.

Yao passes physicals
Rockets center Yao Ming, passed the extensive physicals he took Thursday morning, with the slight tear of the labrum in his right shoulder not considered a problem meriting concern.

Yao had developed soreness in the shoulder last season, with the tear found in MRI's after the season.

Rockets doctors and trainers determined Yao could better treat the shoulder with strengthening and stretching exercises than with surgery, and he was cleared to continue workouts and to play this summer with the Chinese national team.

"He has a slightly torn labrum, but a lot of guys have that," Rockets athletic trainer Keith Jones said. "They play with it. We'll always do maintenance to make sure he keeps it strong. The exam was normal. We didn't feel the need to do an MRI or anything further. The doctor did the full range of motion tests. Everything was fine."

Longtime Houston therapist Russ Paine went to China last month to examine, and if needed, treat the shoulder and the knee Yao fractured last season.

"He said the same thing," Jones said. "(Yao is) doing great. He has no problem with the knee, no problem with the shoulder."

Wells practices
Rockets guard Bonzi Wells went through the majority of Thursday's practice, returning from a pulled groin muscle ahead of schedule.

Wells was not expected to practice until Monday in Houston.

The schedule was moved up to having him go through his first scrimmage in today's second practice. But after going through the drills Wednesday with no problems, he went through all of the drills and most of the scrimmage time Thursday.

"I feel great," Wells said. "I did about two, 2 1/2 hours. It's good to be out there."

Teammates said Wells looked particularly happy about playing and seems to be in good shape. But Rockets coach Rick Adelman said there is a reason Wells would look particularly energetic.

"He did OK (Thursday)," Adelman said. "He scrimmaged for a while and then sat out the end of it. He should do OK. He's got the freshest legs here.

"But he did do OK. He was very active and very live."

T-Mac back at it
Tracy McGrady said the blister that forced him to cut short his participation in Wednesday's practice did not bother him Thursday — as long as he did not look at it.

"It's nasty," he said. "The whole skin is peeled off."

McGrady said he was treated by Waco rehabilitation specialist John Patterson about a week before the start of training camp. Patterson's unusual treatment helped turn around McGrady's season after he went out with back spasms last December.

"I felt good, did well," McGrady said. "I don't have a sub. Bonzi (Wells) was out. Chuck (Hayes, who bruised his right foot) was out. So I went until I couldn't go anymore. We went up and down, went pretty hard. We're getting in great shape."

Hats off to John Patterson.

I wonder whether Clutch or the Chron could do a story on him. It would be awesome to learn more about 'alternative' forms of treatment for such serious injuries.

Me too. When will they start talking Rockets on 610. It seems like MattJ is the only one who brings them in a conversation...I know football is #1, but there's a lot of excitement coming out of Rockets camp....(im glad the Astros arent in the postseason)

It's understandable. Mariijuana is a great pain reliever so I wouldn't be surprised. Although, it'll be kind of weird trying to pass a blunt to a 7'6 guy.

how big of a deal is a torn labrum anyways? Seems like the Rockets org makes it seem like a small deal, but the Yao's people seem to say he has to have surgery on it sooner or later (meaning big deal?)...
