Are players allowed to choose to wear any number (provided it hasn't been retired by a player in his team)? I know that you cannot have a player wearing 0 and another with 00 on one team. So, are there any numbers that you are not allowed to wear for any reasons? Thanks.
Rodman had wanted to wear 69 and caught a lot of flak. Either the team or the league forbade it, I forget which.
Good question. I don't have the answer but I saw something last week in a pre-season game between the Celtics and Mavs I have never seen before. Eric Williams of the Celtics had his regular number "55" on the back of his jersey. The front had # 52 (Vitaly Potapenko's #). The fun started when Williams was whistled for his first foul! (Vitaly was on the bench). Guess your numbers have to match.
in colllege the rule is no Jersey number may excede 55 , In the NBA its kind of an unspoken rule . most dont have #'s higher than 55 , Some exceptions are , George Muresan (77 for 7 foot 7) Dennis Rodman (91 , 73) , I also believe Shawn Bradley wore 76 for the 76ers (and for 7 foot 6) 55 has been worn by quite a few people though , Jason Williams , Jayson Williams , Eric Williams . Must be Williams thing .
