U.S. Food Drops in Afghanistan

I think it's noble of the U.S. to do this for the Afghani people. I'm sorry to see that there is some backlash and criticism over this.

If I was STARVING ....I'd eat whatever someone was gracious enough to give me.So what if the fruit bar gives them an upset stomach ,at least it will keep them alive.

 

It won't keep them alive if they have to throw it up, it'd probably hurt them more.

I'm pretty sure no one here is bemoaning our effort. It's just that someone didn't think this all the way through.

 

You can't blame the United States for this. It isn't the U.S. fault that the people's stomachs are malnourished

 

Call me crazy, but if you're trying to convince people that you're on their side, dropping food that people can't eat into mine fields probably isn't the way to go about it.

It's almost like we're taunting them. Here's some food -- if you can dodge the mines. When you get to it, though, you won't have any clue how to eat it because our instructions are in English. If you manage to figure that out, well, you'll get really sick!

Meanwhile, there are aid organizations who actually can deliver more food (which is edible) at less cost who aren't being allowed to. Yeah, this is a great way to win the support of the Afghan people.

 

After bombing a village, I think dropping food in a mine field is the best thing we could have hoped for. Now the Afghanis know that we're not evil, we're just incompetent.

 

I heard new food packs are being made with information in different Afghani languages. I don't know if the food will be the same.

My prof said these packs were mass produced. He said the samething happened in Vietnam. The U.S. dropped Minute Rice instead of regular rice. The people didn't take to Minute Rice. Why Minute Rice? Cause LBJ had a deal with his friends at Minute Rice. He added he didn't know if some deal is involved here.

 

The current food drop is the best/quickest that can be done at the current time and is designed to be an interim measure until adequate measures can be taken.

Adequate measures include the trucking in of wheat as well as other food aid arriving from the U.S. via ship.

 

Dear lord. b****ing about the wrong kind of food being sent? That some of it was dropped (accidentally) on mine fields? We didn't put the mines there!

Fruit bars! Beans! Biscuits! Peanut Butter! What do they have in common? They are all food! There's nothing sinister about any of them. I think its pretty cynical to question the giving of food to starving people.

Also, that article is so off base. In the middle of bombing a hostile nation, we are not going to send people ("aid workers") out in the field to make sure that the proper food is distributed. What a patently silly idea.

 

I don't understand why we are giving them high dollar food. Granted beans are cheap, but fruit bars and peanut butter? Im not saying its outrageaously expensive ... but I pay close to 6 bucks for my jar of PB that only last a couple weeks...eating only that itw ould only last me a day or so.

But fruit bars, peanut butter and jelly? WTF??? These people want food, not snacks!! And jelly?? Doesn't that have to be refrigerated?

Hey Guys, why don't ya just drop some twinkies and bon bons.

And a napkin?? Like they are going to wipe the food off their fingers. maybe wipe their ass.

 

I think the government gets fruit bars and peanut butter at a very low cost compared to what everyone pays at the store.

Maybe the US should consider dropping food with more substance like grain or wheat. It's impossible to make everyone happy.

To us peanut butter and jelly may seem like snack food, but to anyone who needs to use a food pack, its food. It may not be much but its better than nothing.

Even if some people are getting sick from this food, unless they throw it up almost immediately, the body still will soak up some nutrients from it.

Their digestive systems may not be used to this type of food, sure. I'll buy that. But it can still keep them alive, and that is the whole point, or so I thought. It's also probable that their bodies can bebome acclamated to it also. Maybe saving lives isn't the point, maybe this is publicity. But that doesn't change the fact that this FOOD can keep people alive in that barren wasteland.

 

LoL.. So what if the instructions are in english ? I mean, how hard can it really be to open the damm thing up and put some into your belly

Must be the vat of peanut butter you get at Sam's. Otherwise, I'd shop around.

Reese's isn't even worth 6 bucks!

Probably some price gouging going on.

 

I say screw the people who are b****ing and moaning down there (if they are), let's use that peanut butter and jelly and feed our homeless. Geez......
