I am having trouble connecting to a wireless network that I have permission to connect to. First of all, my laptop recognizes the network when I am within range as I see the status in my taskbar. The problem is I don't have any network functions (Internet, printers, etc.). I was given instructions by the lady who had them before she went home sick today but I am still having trouble. Here are the instructions: Go to Control Panel Go to Intenet & Network Connections or Network Connections Locate Wireless Network Connection Right Click Icon Go to Properties " "tab, click Add Assoc- type NetworkName Check Data & Network unr Key type - Key Code Click OK Everything looks as described until I get to the Properties. I don't see an Add anywhere or any place to type a NetworkName or unr key. What am I doing wrong? As I said, my computer already detects the network, will that cause problems in any way? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
In Properties, on the top should have a tap says "Wireless Network". Click on that, and you should see "Add" in "Preferred Network" box.
Have you restarted? I've seen network connections go buggy and the only way to fix them is to reboot. Also, you might have some sort of power saving feature- try connecting your power cord to your laptop. Also, some models of laptop have an actual switch for the wireless. I've seen this switch get turned off time after time on accident.
At least you covered the basics. Some folks are the 'never restart' people. I've also seen this problem when the network card was shot. You could always go to WalMart and 'rent' a wireless card to determine once and for all if it is a software or hardware problem.
If you go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools then Services. There should be a service entitled Windows Zero Configuration...make sure it's started. If not, right click on it and choose Start. You should be able to configure your wireless connection after that.
Lil Pun, what's your laptop's model? Some models have a "wireless" button to turn on and off. Might that be the problem? Also, check that there isn't already a program to manage the connections, like LinkSys Manager.
What type of network are you trying to connect to? If it's a home one, restarting the wireless router/modem always works for me.
It's an older Dell model purchased a few years ago. It doesn't have a switch, like I said it recognizes the network just fine I just can't use the Internet, printers, etc. I found the spot where I can add a network or edit an existing one. When I go to edit the existing one, I type the unr key in the Network key space. Then it has a list of several items to select from, I don't remember what any of them are though.
