Our AC unit outside our hose has been malfunctioning. The house does not seem to cool down at all. In Houston, this is hell  . There is a heavy accumulation of ice on the lines coming from the AC unit (which is outside). Ideas??

I reccommend calling somebody to check it out. Our A/C broke down on Monday, we had a guy fix it yesterday. If you want, I can give you their number.

I know you are not supposed to clean the coils with a sharp object, like a screwdriver. PSHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! :(

My parents unit used to do that. Turn it off and let the ice thaw. When you turn it back on, let the house cool slowly. Don't let it run continuously or the lines will freeze up again.
I don't know what the underlying cause is, but that should be a temporary fix.

More than likely you are low on refrigerant. Someone needs to come out and locate the leak if possible and add refrigerant to your system.
