Alrighty, y'all have to deal with a lot more of Drunk Fatty than you're used to. My question to anyone who has ever had a broken leg: When the Doctor says "no weight" on the leg, how accurate is that? Because I've not been good. Crutches tend to chafe and bruise my armpits. Blargh!
Okay, I just read up on that thread. I guess it is. I really wouldn't walk on it at all for the first few days. Give the fractured area and some of the surrounding tissue a chance to heal for at least a week or two. The bone has to form a soft callus of sorts, which then has to re-calcify in order to properly heal. I would think that the more pressure you put on the leg, the less of a chance you give that callus to form. But then again, I have never broken my leg - I've only learned about these types of things in school.
Try those other cruches. The kind that wraps around your forearms. One of the cripple kids in south park uses them. I sprained my ankle really bad in Europe and they gave me a pair. I was aghast at first but they felt more comfortable.
That's what I was thinking! (btw, that is my name...) My point is.... Look. I can take pain. I apparently walked on a broken leg for the past two weeks. But I will tell you, walking on crutches without padding does serious damage. I, seriously, cannot put anything under my arms right now. I have bruises that are all around my armpits. I'd rather walk around in the cast. I'm just curious if this is bad. Because otherwise I will be bedridden. And I'd prefer not to be. I've already sequestered myself to be a "day" drinker.
your crutches are set too high. your weight is not supposed to fall on the crutches through your pits. its supposed to be through your arms, and the top of the crutch to lean against the sides of your body, slightly lower than your pits. didnt a doctor or physiotherapist teach you this?
How could a doctor possibly know more about your incredible recuperative powers and ability to withstand pain? Just remove the cast and walk like a man.
I've always heard you should hop around only on the leg that is broken to shorten the healing time. The hopping stimulates the healing of the bone and reduces chaffing of the armpits caused by antiquated crutches.
since you're living in "the hood" now, my suggestion is to get one of your friendly neighbors to help you along your daily routines.
ask the doc why they said no weight on the leg..just call and ask. Mine was no weight because it would result in an immediate break of healing bones post-op. Usually knowing *why* they told you something helps you decide how closely you need to follow it..
I sprained the **** out of ankle and my dad made me crutches, no lie, the armrests were wooden, no padding, least he sanded it down real good, thanks Dad. I took washcloths and wrapped them around the armrests with duct tape to relieve the pain; the embarassement of having homemade crutches was another thing. We like to keep it ghetto around my house.
