The last DUNE novel Frank Herbert wrote before his death, CHAPTERHOUSE: DUNE, ends on a cliffhanger, the story obviously unfinished. The success of HOUSE ATREIDES, HOUSE HARKONNEN, and HOUSE CORRINO, as well as the popularity of the Sci Fi Channel DUNE miniseries has brought countless new readers to Frank Herbert's marvelous universe. The history of the epic Butlerian Jihad was the tale the fans most wanted to read. Brian and Kevin have published THE BUTLERIAN JIHAD, delivered the draft manuscript of THE MACHINE CRUSADE, and are beginning work on the final volume of the trilogy, THE BATTLE OF CORRIN. While there are many more important stories to tell in the Dune universe, Brian and Kevin have decided that the next major project they will undertake -- the next story the fans want to read -- is "DUNE 7," based on a detailed outline Frank Herbert left in a safety deposit box before his death. A great deal of vital information has been set up in the first two prequel trilogies, and now a large readership -- who had never before finished reading HERETICS OF DUNE and CHAPTERHOUSE: DUNE -- is ready for the rest of the story after the end of CHAPTERHOUSE. http://www.dunenovels.com/news/dune7announcement.html awesome news, while brian and kevin's work isn't bad, its nowhere as great as Frank Herberts. with the original outline, we can finally finish the saga!!!
heh you assumed correctly. while the first one was indeed the best, and the rest were declining in quality, the story was still intricate enough to keep me hooked.
Frank Herbert's writing style was so unique and colorful, I don't think I could read a book written by someone else trying to live in his universe. I may be wrong. I didn't even know until last night, however, that Chapterhouse was not supposed to be the last book. I might check out #7 just to get the end of the story as Frank wanted it.
Meh. Personally, I thought the books got better as they went along. "Dune" is the most simplistic of the six, and I think really serves as an introduction to the universe. Herbert doesn't really hit his true stride until "God Emperor". I liken the series to Herbert drawing back the curtain on his immense world slowly but surely. Chapterhouse just blew me away completely. I like looking at it this way: Dune, Mesiah, and Children set up Leto 2 as the God Emperor. God Emperor is the "main" story of the series. Heretics, Chapterhouse, and Dune 7 will serve as the conclusion, describing the outcome and aftereffects of Leto 2's regime. BTW imo the Dune series is the best literature ever written, and it's not really even close.
Really? I thought the complex interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion in Dune was unmatched, even in the next 5 books. Or something like that...
there were series of prelude to dune series, wasnt bad, but definately not as good as DUNE. must finish chapterhouse in time for release.
Well said...I totally agree. I do agreee it was a tall order to try to fillin writing on the Dune universe, so it wasnt much surprise that the prequels arent as quality as the originals....I still liked them adn read them all. Ill jump on Dune 7 when it comes out.
