So I started a new 40hr job this week. From what I can tell it is kind of frowned upon to take an hour for lunch. The manager said he would half an hour for lunch, and considered taking the time to send a friend an email etc later in the day going towards his lunch time. Now I don't care to take an hour for lunch everyday, but I think it is strange that it seemed kind of frowned upon if you do (and that pisses me off). I'm obsessing over this. Please tell me this isn't normal. Why do I always get the weird ones?
take your hour lunch break and tell them to bugger off. If it's one hour, u take 1 hour and 1 minute. Don't let them tell you otherwise.
Do you work at Whataburger? I believe they're the ones that give half-hour lunches (my brother used to work there ages ago). As for your dilemma, personally speaking, where I work it's frowned upon taking less than an hour-and-a-half lunch break, it's just a no-no. I tend to take two long breaks per day, usually a couple of hours at min.
Are you salary or hourly? If hourly, go ahead and take 10 min lunches and take that time and a half overtime. Then when the Mgr b****es at you for overtime, tell him you are forsaking long lunches for the good of the company. If salary, take that hour lunch and also take as many bathroom breaks as you need. The company wants as much productivity out of you as possible without incurring extra cost, ie overtime, so you want to make sure you take advantage of them as much as possible and not vice versa. As the Sprint commercial would say, "Sticking it to the Man"...
Dude, look for another job. If they're micro-managing your lunches you'll run into much worse later down the line. Trust me. Do what you need to keep them happy now, but start looking.
at circuit city, we got hour lunches if we worked more than 6 hours, and half hour if it was less than 6 hours. at walgreens half an hour lunch on our time, and 2 fifteen minute breaks on theirs the 15's are frownd upon tho. in all the time i worked there, i took maybe 5 of em.
where i work i do 10 hour days we dont clock out for lunch cuz there is only 3 of us managing the store, while one eats in the back. usually we take multiple breaks of just surfing around the internet and all, watching movies on the one tv there. its not bad but it can be a hassle at times since i may be eating lunch and then be asked to come out and help if a sudden influx of customers come in or if the phones start ringing off the hooks
We get to choose between a 30, 45, or 60 minute lunch. The shorter your lunch, the earlier you can go home. I have a 45 minute lunch, so I leave 15 minutes earlier than the hour lunch people and 15 minutes later than the 30 minute people. MEOWGI, what are you doing at your new job?
I had a job once where my boss was essentially obsessed with the time clock. That every minute needed to be spent working because there was no way we could get all the work done if we goofed off for even a second. It got to the point where he kept moving up the morning meetings to add time to the work day. Instead of starting at 8am, he'd have us come in for the meeting at 7:30am, and then he moved it to 7am and then to 6:30am. And it was the worst job I ever had because there simply wasn't enough work to even fill the day. Even when we were starting the work day at 8am, I was usually finished for the day by Noon. But, of course, I couldn't leave. I had to sit there the rest of the day and pretend to work. We weren't allowed to leave the office for lunch. The boss would send out for food and we'd have to eat at our desks. Nothing worse than a boss with an obsession with time who also has no idea how much time things should take. Of course, the next job I had allowed me to just go home whenever the work for the day was finished (it was at a daily newspaper, and there was a finite amount of work, when it was done, there was really no way to get ahead for the next day), but since I was paid by the hour, we would also find busy work to do just so we could get a full 40-hour work week. Thankfully, that job started at 3pm each day, and the boss left at 5pm. It's easier to goof off on the clock when the boss isn't there. At one point, the people on my shift actually joined a bowling league. We'd finish our work around 7pm and go bowling while still on the clock. After the game, we'd go back to the office and clock out. We were probably not what anyone would consider model employees.
When I worked at a credit union, we were only allowed 45 minutes for lunch. However, we were all considered hourly employees for the most part except for the management types (and they still had to take 45 minutes). At my present job, I can take an hour, 30 minutes, and even an hour and a half (those are on the days I work out/run) if I want. As long as my supervisor is okay with it, they don't care.
Jeez, y'all poor dudes. My work is completely flexible. I can work 40 hours in 3 days and then take Thursday and Friday off. Or I can take a 2 and a half hour lunch, but I"ll just need to make it up sometime during the week. That's how it should be.
start looking for a new job now. if they don't respect you enough to get your work done AND take an hour lunch then they are going to ride you about every little thing.
That's why I brought it up. I work on the other side of town and I was hoping to do just that to help avoid some traffic etc. It answer sounded like "no way". If you take an half hour lunch the other half goes to the little breaks you take during the day.... I do graphic design. My last job was a lot more flexible about these things and maybe it spoiled me. I could tell these new people were kind of weird but I didn't know how much. We will see how the tuns out. It reminds me of the first boss I had in this business who wanted me to work late every day just to impress people who called after 5, even if i had nothing to do. She said she was embarrassed one day when someone called at 6 and nobody was there. (but at least hour lunches were the norm).
We normally stick to an hour, but there are days when we go over. They're pretty adamant here about always taking at least a 30 minute lunch. They're also pretty leinent about us taking a little too much time. About once every two months, they get in a tizzy about not coming in 5 minutes late or taking more than an hour lunch, but it's hard to take seriously when your managers take a two hour lunch the next week and come in joking around about it.
I have a very open schedule. I am at work for 8 hours a day but only do work for about 2 hours. So usually I will take about 30 minutes to an hour for lunch, but if I want to take a 1.5 or 2 hour lunch I can do that too.
