First off, how in the HELL does Mariah Carey get listed all over the Grammy awards? Are you freaking kidding me?

And, once again, the old fogies strike by putting Rolling Stone and Neil Young records up for nomination in rock categories when they don't even marginally deserve them.

God, the Grammy's are such a frigging joke.

What's wrong with Mariah Carey? I'd do her and that alone is deserving of a nomination. :D

Mariah Carey is ok (I dont know about a grammy though) but what I cant believe is Gwen Stefani. She makes me want to throw up every time I hear her garbage.

Also, I cant stand the old bands/artist as well.

I just don't understand the Grammy's. On one hand, you think that it is just a popularity contest. No one would argue that Mariah Carey and Hollaback Girl getting nominations for song of the year and/or album of the year (performance is a different story) has little to do with artistic merit. There were much more deserving records if that is the case.

But, then they go and nominate the Rolling Stones, who had only marginal popular success last year and ZERO critical acclaim (ditto Neil Young). WTF?

There are legit contenders in every category that totally deserve to be there. I think Kanye West, Paul McCartney (that's a great record) and others have every right being on that list based on their contributions. But, Beverly Hills by Weezer? And Fiona Apple, who had one of the better CD's of 2005 barely gets one nomination?

As I said, the Grammy suck.

I was just playing around. I agree the Grammy award does suck, as you said it has become a popularity contest.

Who watches any of the award shows anymore? There are so freaking many of them that it doesnt mean anything anymore. The nominations are a joke, the show is a joke, the performances are ****. I'd rather read a book.

Also, I should clarify that all I'm talking about are categories relating to songs and albums, NOT performances. That is a different story. Mariah Carey may very well have had one of the better PERFORMANCES of the year. She has a terrific voice. But, performing is different from writing a song or making a CD.

can someone explain to me the difference b/t album and record of the year. also, if an album is nominated for album of the year shouldn't at least one song from that album be nominated for song of the year?

What is the difference between song and record of the year?

Also, Grammy used to mean something. American Music Awards was the popularity contest and Grammys used to be about artistic merit. I guess they are just the same award now.

I'm pretty sure Mariah Carey is mass-produced psychosis.

    Seriously - I think she's nucking futs.

Not to mention "her" music is awful.

If I'm not mistaken, Song of the Year is a writing award. Record of the Year is for the song itself. Think of it like Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture at the Oscars.

As for the nominations, I stopped reading the list the moment I saw "Hollaback Girl" nominated for Record of the Year. Are you freaking kidding me?! Look, I don't mind Gwen Stefani or No Doubt(although their music this decade is crap), but "Hollaback Girl" is one of the worst songs I've ever heard. That's not hyperbole. It's like this year's "Milkshake". Just absolutely dreadful.

Record of the Year is the award given out for best song to the performer of the song. It is supposedly based on the combination of the performance and the songwriting.

Song of the Year is the award given out for the best song but given to the writer.

So, a song could be Song of the Year but not Record of the Year if the performance didn't match the song quality or vice versa if the song wasn't as good as the peformance. That's the idea anyway.

Album of the Year is a throwback to vinyl and is given to the performer for an entire long-play album (or, in this case, CD).

Well since the best one is already taken.

If you were to lock Vin Diesel in a room with a guitar, a year later you would have the greatest album ever, it would sweep the Grammy's. When asked why he doesn't do this Vin replied "Because Grammy's are for queers." Then he ate a knife to show the seriousness of his response.
