I think most Americans are worried about the off-shoring aspects of outsourcing. Offshoring is tangibly bad. Toyota is building another plant in N. America to cater to our giant market. GM's "world car" model had its successes in Europe with its Opel brand, where it's designed, but in America it's been bludgeoned by foreign competition under rebadged Saturn models. OTOH, Toyota's domestic success continued with the Scion, and it was a domestic creation. I agree with Paul Krugman's position for a nationalized healthcare system. A layman picking a cost effective health plan is almost as bad as them managing stocks. Several millions aren't insured, and companies are beginning to shift that burden upon the government. Furthermore, the government trend has been backwards, we're heavily subsidizing big pharma with overbloated health care packages that don't amount to any savings for the taxpayer. For better or worse, we need a nationalized education plan/system to give the semblence of standardized education rather than having regional pockets of inequality.... I've posted some dire projections into America's future, but I don't believe that the United States would knowingly render itself uncompetitive when the losses are very tangible. Either the government or public reaction will give.
