    Brett Ratner to Direct X-Men 3

    20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment set Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour" films) on Friday night to replace Matthew Vaughn as the director of X-Men 3, reports Variety. Shooting will start in August for a Memorial Day weekend 2006 opening date.

    A comic book enthusiast, Ratner was among the helmers considered to direct the first X-Men. The job went to Bryan Singer instead. Ratner then spent a full year developing Superman Returns, the film that ultimately prompted Singer to drop out of directing "X3."

    The trade adds that the "X3" budget is locked, and Fox and Marvel brass consider the script by Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg to be at least as strong as that of the first two installments. The original returning stars have been signed, and the cast is bolstered by Kelsey Grammer as Beast, Vinnie Jones as Juggernaut and Lost star Maggie Grace as Kitty Pryde (aka Shadowcat).

    Well, I'm not too thrilled. I know he's a comic book fan and according to this he almost had the job for the first movie, but he hasn't made one movie yet that makes me think he could make a movie as good or better as X2. Red Dragon was his best movie, but I think he owed a lot to Hopkins and the fact that it was part of an established franchise. After the Sunset was just pathetic. I know some people view comic book characters as cartoons, but some of them do touch on serious subject matter, especially the X-Men. Hopefully it works out for the best.

    I like Brett Ratner. Everything he has done, that I have seen, I have enjoyed. Hell, even Money Talks was great :)

    Ratner is the posterboy for how nepotism consistently yields poor results. But then again, Hollywood as a whole is pretty much a billboard for such.

    Batman Begins and Superman Returns get Christopher Nolan and Bryan Singer.

    X3 gets...Ratner.

    Marvel loses.

    Red Dragon was good, but it had a waaaay better cast than X-Men will. Here's hoping it's a good script...

    I guess the disappointment is more of Singer's doing than Ratner's track record of mostly bad movies. Then again, some people doubted Singer could pull off a deep comic book movie while maintaining action elements and pacing. The first X-Men was a wash to me.

    It could've been worse. They could've brought in Joel Schumaker and let him include tight crotch and rubber nipple shots in a set full of fruity colors.

    That's like trading a Porsche in for a Ford Focus. Good luck, Fox.

    (Still, it could be worse. if it was McG behind the camera, it would be like trading a Porsche in for a tricycle. With no seat. And one broken wheel.)

    I wouldn't worry too much. Sam Raimi's stuff before Spider-Man really sucked. The X-Men source material is strong enough to make a good movie if followed correctly.

    All I know is, if they're intending to continue the storyline using the Phoenix Saga, it better have some cool fight scenes in outerspace.

    If they are to make an X4 I hope they use the Onslaught saga...Prof X going nuts is great.

    Are you calling the director of The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil, X-Men, and X-Men 2 a freaking Altima?? Name one bad movie Singer has done. Lest you forget, WB DROPPED Ratner off Superman Returns FOR Singer.

    Ha ha. Look dude, he's been involved with some decent flicks, but Scorcese's a Porsche. "Usual Suspects" is a cool flick, but it's no masterpiece. Singer's a V6. :D
