When I was younger I was very lucky that my parents bought me a little dirtbike when I was about 13ish, but being young and dumb I drove that thing in the most nasty mud and water... After all the repairs just to get the thing to run again the costs were almost as much as the bike so because of my dumb mistake it was sold... That brings me to now... I have always wanted to get back to riding again, but it seems that Dirtbikes command more cash than ATVs do.. All I'm looking for is a cheap bottom of the line trail rider ATV or Dirtbike, anyone know of what brand you get the most bang for my dollar?? Also, any tips would be great... I'm looking at the 250cc in the ATVs and Dirtbikes.. Thanks guys...
Not to try to change your mind, but... I am a motocross rider & in October my good friend was paralized basically from the neck down on his dirtbike. He has a little movement in his bicep & tricep, NOTHING else. I have not ridden since. It is a vary fun sport, but I have not decided if I will ride anymore or not. Easy to say that you can't live your life in fear, but when you see your buddy in that kind of shape & he can't move anymore it make you think. He keeps his spirits up & is taking it all better than can be expected. That being said I have a CRF450 (4-stroke) & it is an awesome bike. It basically races against a 250 2-stroke. If you are getting a bike I would go with either a 250 or 450 4-stroke. So much easier to maintain & generally people are faster on the 4-stroke.
I had one too, as a kid. Get a 1984-87 Honda three-wheeler. The 200X, the 250R, the 300X, or the Big Red were all nice. Just make sure thet are in GOOD condition.
I got my first dirt bike at 5 second at 7 and third at 13 I know they can be dangerous but I also think they teach responsiblity. Safety is the most important thing. If you don't have a safe place to ride one don't get it.
If you're under 200lbs, get a Yamaha TT-R125 If you over 200, get the TT-R250 plenty of fun, good pep but not lightning fast like those CRF 450's, and it's all but unbreakable. They are designed specifically for the kind of riding you describe if you look around you can get a good used TT-R125 for about $1000
Thanks for the info guys, it has been a big help... Rockets Red Glare, I'm sorry to hear about your friend, I hope everything works out for the best... I do have a question about the size, how much taller is the 250cc Vs the 125ccs? I'm a bit over 6 foot, but under 200 pounds, I dont want to look like I'm tring to ride a little kids bike.. I'm gonna stop by and look at a dealership after work sometime next week... Thanks again..
It really depends on how you are going to ride it. It you are going to ride on motocross tracks you will like the power of a 250 (2-stroke) or 450 (4-stroke). But for trail riding a 125 might get it done. Check out www.houstonmotocross.com you might get some good info on there. Let us know what you decide...
Depends on the use you want out of it. Just for fun, then that is something you have to decide. There's a big difference between 2, 3, or 4 wheels. I enjoy streetbikes, owning 2 sportbikes, one for road use and one for track.
I've been shopping for bikes for our family lately. Still looking. One thing that had me down the bike trail instead of the ATV trail is a bike is so much lighter that if you flip it, it's gonna hurt if you can't get out from under it, but not near as bad as an ATV. And to me, a bike is way more controllable. If you over buy, you could find yourself in trouble a lot faster. I thing I have settled on is getting a 4 stroke. Easier to run, more durable, less initial power (which I want - I just want to trail ride) and I think 2 stroke will start fading with the new emission laws that are effecting the sport.
I agree, the 2-strokes could be gone in a few years. The 4-stroke has come a long way in the past few years.
