I think maybe the fact that the games are in September and not June or July may be a factor. Kids who are normally watching the games and dreaming of "someday" are in school or doing homework when the games are on. Our TV has been so messed up lately though, I'm not even sure we get the Olympics.
True, I remember being a kid and watching the olympics all summer. Everytime I watcvh I remember how it kept me busy in the summertime. It was great. We even had our own olymics in the neighborhood to boot. Having it this late in the year means that they will lose possible viewers later on in life...at least in america. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
Thats a good point, having the Olympics so late, not to mention the time difference for the entire western hemsiphere, as well as Europe, must have hurt some of the interest. But with that said, its still one of the, if not the best Olympic Games to date, without a doubt. The atmosphere, the facilities, the opening ceremonies, the organization, and the Australian's hospitality has been second to none, from what I've read and seen. Its not even worth comparing it to the Atlanta Olympics, IMHO. Having Kathy Freeman, and aboriginal Australian, light the torch was awesome, as was seeing both North and South Korea uniting as one team in the ceremonies and throwing out all past animosities away. Sure, there's the drug tests, and other conspiracies, but all and all, this version of the Summer Games looks damn good. Btw, isn't it amazing to see Australlia, with a population of approx. 20 million, battle it out with the overwhelmingly favourite United States, with close to 15 times the population? I think the Aussies will start to fall off the pace now that the second week has started... we struggle mightily in the track and field events! Oh, maybe NBC should just delay the telecast until next June so the Olympic games can be watched in the summer......... ....for YEARS we Aussies have been up all night watching major sporting events held all over the world - and we tried to accomodate the US by holding the games in Spring rather than in our Summer - maybe if NBC televised everything LIVE and ALL NIGHT people would actually watch the games. Anyway, I'm having a blast and I'm desperately anticipating Keiran Perkins victory in the 1500m tomorrow night!! AND hoping that Matt Shirvington can scrape into the final of the 100m sprint! ------------------
