    Beltre going to Mariners
Ken Rosenthal / The Sporting News

    http://msn.foxsports.com/story/3254640

Slugging third baseman Adrian Beltre has agreed to a five-year, $64 million deal with the Seattle Mariners.

Beltre, 25, erupted last year with a MLB-best 48 home runs. He also had 121 RBIs, fourth in the league, and hit .334.

He is also a slick fielder and finished second in the NL MVP voting to Barry Bonds.

    _____________________________________________________

That averages out to 12.8 a year.(if accurate). How does that effect the market or the price for Beltran? Seems to me that Beltre had a much better year, but Beltran is considered the more highly sought free agent due to his defense, speed, and clutch hitting. Is the reported 13.5 million the Astros are supposedly offering going to be enough?

Seems like a ot of money for Beltre, had a great year. But the cynic in me wonders if he'll come back to earth after the big payday.

And this comes on the heels of Scott Boras making the claim that Adrian Beltre had the greatest season of any 3rd baseman in history. You would think Boras could have gotten him a better deal. Damn that new market. :)

I think this is a sign that the Beltran situation will be over and done with before the new year. The Astros are definitely in the hunt. IMHO, it is down to just how badly Steinbrenner wants CB.

Considering the parks they play in, Beltre had a much better year than Beltran this year. If he can't get more than 12.8 per for Beltre, I don't see how he'll get much more than that for Beltran. The market's been set in the last few years, he's just waiting for a team to panic and overpay I guess.

Well, I guess this is why Boras hasn't called the Astros about Carlos since the winter meetings.

5 years 65 million, eh? Either the market is permanantly going to be fixed like this, or even Boras knows that Beltre simply had a career year with impending free agency.

I posted this in the other Beltran forum as well:

Look, if Beltre's contract is any indication, the Astros offer to Beltran appears more than fair. Beltre only got 5 years...and less per year than what the 'stros are offering Beltran, and their numbers are pretty comparable. Beltre was freaking legit last season.

Soooo...let's get this crappy thing done, already!!! If we're forced to wait on the Cubs to see if they can get rid of Sammy...and the Yankees to see if they can actually pull this Johnson deal off...then we're going to be forced to look elsewhere. And I think we're the ones bidding up Beltran, to this point...which means that Boras' little manuevers and delays may actually backfire on him when Carlos signs.

Beltre had one good season, IMO the Mariners overpaid.

Will it be considered "overpaying" if Beltre hit 30 HR per year while avearaging over .290 in the next 5 years? What is the standard of saying one is overpaid?

Personally I think Beltre will live up his salary. He is still young.

Yeah, it's a good deal for the M's if Beltre keeps playing like last year. However, there is a long list of players who had a huge season after several mediocre ones and then went right back to being mediocre. Beltre has age and getting over health problems on his side though. I would be happy, yet nervous if the Astros had signed Beltre to a deal like this.

Don Baylor found an "easily correctable flaw" in his swing. :D

Maybe Rudy Jaramillo can find a different easily correctable flaw...

There's been talks, but baseball's steroid policy has not changed one bit. I'd be surprised if they can come to an agreement that has teeth for next season. It's really a joke.

Under the current program you have to test positive approx. 1,253 times before you're suspended for 1 year.

This is actually quite reasonable compared to some of the rumors being thrown around that Beltre would get a 10 year deal in excess of 100 mil.

It's hard for me to fathom that Beltre simply had a "fluke" season last year. He was too damn good. He's always had potential and simply lived up to it last year. I doubt he'll remain this good in Safeco, but he'll probably be worth what is being paid to him.
