I was looking for an old Thread about JVG and notting getting T's, sorry did not find it. I thought about it last night when Nowitski charged Yao, and was awarded with two free throws. That ended last night's game, and I wondered if it is a greater effect on the team than I used to believe. Because my thinking is changing. Why would JVG believe his self-perceived self-control is so much more important than going off, if only once a month or three, to protect his players?
That's the million dollar question......................about a coach that prides himself on his loyalty to his players. Maybe Yao isn't his player???????????????????????
Its true. The reason why I like Don/Donnie Nelson is that they stick up for their players. And it usually gets the team fired up, Don Nelson got kicked out of a game after 5 minutes!!
I am opposed to gratuitous T'ing of/by coaches. However, sometimes it is absolutelypositively the only answer. That was the picture perfect time, and the picture did not develop.
If you look at all the other coaches in the league, the first thing they do during time out is to talk to the refs. And now look at Van Gandy, the first thing he does during time out is to give his players dirty looks.
You can tell at the games (not on tv, though), that Yao is frustrated at all the calls he's not getting but he is distraught between his responsibility to his personality, heritage and culture (representing all of China) vs. his coaches inability to fight for him. Yao never used to give exacerbated looks or wave his hands at bad calls - he does that now, but I don't think he'll go much beyond that.
Heh. Maybe JVG figures that he just doesn't look good yelling up -- way way up -- at a ref. The Rocket players tower over him of course, but that is OK because we all expect our NBA players to be huge. But can you imagine the giggling in stadiums around the league at the sight of an angry JVG yelling at a ref's belly button?
We need Les Alexander to start pulling a Cuban on the officiating. What would really help is to have a split screen video of Shaq on one side and Yao on the other doing the same moves and getting different calls.
