[GETOFFMYDICKERSON] Body language in sports isn’t mystical. It can win or lose the next play

Dillon Brooks was great for this.
But I want to add something. Ideally KD would carry himself more like Dillon except it wouldn’t have that slightly delusional edge because he’s actually skilled enough to back it up. But the slumping disappointed body language doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. It could be ok, even a potential value add, if his positive body language was increased 5x. At least that’s what the research said from a long time ago.

He gets slumpy on himself when he causes a dumb turnover and alternatively his praise really seems to effect guys for the better.

but again, I wish he was less petulant acting on the court, and Alpi would quit with the incredulousness BS.

The other day I saw someone yawn. Everyone around them took a nap immediately afterwords.

The whole team outside of Kd. Jabari kept his chi up and head high even during that terrible shooting slump a month ago. He stayed professional and kept playing good defense and more importantly kept shooting.

Only problem with Sengun is he won’t leave the refs alone.

The difference between Caleb Williams and Kevin Durant is that the former is a young player who the coach could sit him down and talk, and the latter is an established star who is not ashamed to use burner accounts to snipe on teammates. He's not going to change at this stage of his career.

Very, very speculative. KD knows his career only has so many battles left & the young guns need to know whenever they mess up. JG never had that correction from an alpha dog & look how that turned out. Everything for him was paint-your-nails-positive.

Besides, negative feedback can do a better job of preventing the same mistake because it's more memorable & sometimes it works immediately.

Basketball, in general, and coaches, in particular, are SOFT compared to football. Baseball is soft too but it's a more laid back sport.

Whatever - if KD being pissed or throwing his hands up really rattles professional athletes - then those professional athletes are too soft and weak to win anyway.

KD isn’t some great verbal leader, never has claimed to be and really doesn’t need to be. He plays hard and is an elite guy on the court- and that’s fine. Leadership typically comes from the top of the organization and works its way down.

KD ideally needs to cut his turnovers down, but he is by FAR the Rockets best player and the Rockets would be in the lottery without him.

There are very few true clear cut leaders in the NBA and most stars are not leaders. The best leader is arguably Donkey and he is an ******* half the time.

This is totally false. It is not more memorable. It's only more memorable if you arbitrarily add drama to it. The drama will be remembered, the lesson will not be trained or remembered.

I think there's a place for sh*t-talking in sports. We don't have to justify that other than to say in pressure situations urgency and directness take on a higher priority.

But just in case you're thinking of applying this idea in real life, it doesn't work in a regular setting. It loses its effectiveness very quickly too, people become immune. That's why CP3 got waived - didn't know it was the wrong moment for his hypercritical drama.

It most certainly is more memorable and it's not controversial. Negativity bias is an evolutionary adaptation, can't escape it.

We're also talking about pro NBA players who get heaps of praise all day so they're not lacking in positive reinforcement. What our team has lacked is urgency to get better. An aging KD showing some disapproval of the same mistakes being made is not necessarily a bad thing for a young core that's never played with an all time great.

Chris Paul is a notorious verbal whiner and not an apt comparison. He hasn't made an All-NBA team in years & he couldn't back up his talk with his play anymore so he got cut. He would've made JG better though. KD is still an All-NBAer & I hope our team does take notice when he's unhappy. Draymond is even more annoying than Chris & just as negative, yet everyone in that org calls him their "leader" (personally not a fan though)

I'd love to see this same columnist do a review of Tom Brady's body language on the sideline. Or Jordan for that matter. Neither became the GOAT of GOATs giving everyone a hug after every play.

And when the guys DO perform KD is the first to dab them up

Most of them are totally unforced too. Just loses the ball or passes it directly to the other team. Fred or no Fred, he can't be responsible for this many live ball turnovers leading to easy buckets for the opponent.

Got to be like Lu Dort. Man doesn't show much body language, doesn't complain to refs too often. Is then on good graces with the refs to get away with the most dirtiest of plays, or gets a soft penalty when caught red-handed on replays.

Body language is the formula to a NBA title. Rockets needs a body language assistant coach ASAP. ;)

Was chemistry better last year? Maybe. That amazing chemistry last year resulted in… almost exactly the same record we have this year…. And a first round loss to a lower seed.

So many people saying we are so much worse this year, and it’s just not factually true. Will they do better in the playoffs this year? Who knows. But they definitely have a higher ceiling than last year, whether they all love each other or not.

Does KD have bad body language sometimes? Sure. But so does Luka, so did Kobe, so does Harden, so did MJ.

You don’t need your superstar to have the personality of Mary Lou Retton to have a functional team. You certainly don’t need all 12 guys to act like cheerleaders. If anything, I think the Rockets are missing a veteran glue guy to help keep the ship upright when things get rocky. I dunno like a FVV or Adams, maybe?

this is one of the reasons guys like Derek Fisher, Shane Battier, Udonis Haslem, PJ Tucker, etc. had jobs.
