China doesn't have the military bases worldwide to be aggressive outside of the South Chinese waters but their Defense should be strong against any aggressors.

Anyway, fast forward to today:

Iran has been sending a bunch of $30,000 drones and cheap missiles to trigger Patriot air defense systems that cost $3 million+ per missile. Already, there are reports of air defense systems getting low or running out of munitions in a couple of countries. The fear is that Iran will then send their more advanced drones and missiles before the restocking of defenses can take place.

It seems we, and the rest of the world, no longer have large scale production capacity for big bombs and shells. The largest pre-2020 US source of TNT was... wait for it... Ukraine. That is now all off-line. The next biggest TNT producer is Poland, but they are focused on Ukraine and Europe. Estimates are we would run out of critical armaments within a week if we got in a major war with China and as the excerpt above notes, probably within a few weeks of current hostilities with Iran.

Note: Russia has more production capacity because they have re-industrialized their military production since they invaded Ukraine, but even they are not where they were during the height of the Cold War.

Anyway, this is likely one reason Iran has no interest in listening to peace overtures from the US, assuming we are at all serious. The smart play is to wait and see if this is a legit issue and then make a decision.

If this is a legit problem, it means we either just quit or go in with a bunch of boots, albeit without some of the air and artillery support we usually assume.

(Makes one wonder what $1.5 trillion is buying in our Department of War.)
