Turnover machine? not sure where you are getting this from. Eye test tells me his turnovers are nowhere near as troublesome as turnovers from others within the team. In fact i just checked and his TPG is 1.4 this season. I don't know where you are getting turnover machine from. Defence i agree with, but he is the least of your worries in the rockets in terms of turnovers.
Maybe the stats show he’s super efficient, but I kind of wonder if people actually watch the games instead of YouTube highlights when comments like this are made. Do you not see the boneheaded passes he makes? I can recall at least two tonight. One of which made me throw my Roku remote. But yes… KD is a boneheaded passer under pressure as well. It’s always been his Achilles Heel. And Sengun always opts for the pass that’ll get him on the top 10 instead of just making the simple right pass. It infuriates me when he does it when he doesn’t need to even though when he gets one to go it is pretty impressive. So yeah I’m an equal opportunity hater on the rockets turnovers.
Stay off the booze. He's averaging 3 assist per 1.4 TOs (twice as many). Thats actually really good, considering he's basically a rookie. Cade Cunningham use to average 5.7 assists to 3.7 TOs his first couple of years.
I see Reed make some bonehead turnovers. I also see Reed not make many turnovers. Making occasional stupid turnovers does not make a turnover machine. This is an an example of confirmation bias in eyeball tests. You see some bad turnovers, and then every turnover you see confirms he's a turnover machine. Reed is not a turnover machine.
I hate this pompous btch of a coach. why care so much about defense when most teams don’t have an answer when he constantly drains open looks. worst coach ever. idgaf about the injuries, F fred anyways. reed>>>>> fred. idiots. anyone who defends Udookie is more stubborn and moronic than him. my god bad enough the logo that never changes the stupid ass of a coach that still gets to be on the sideline, there’s nothing worse than this, omg please read this dooka i hate you
He does make bonehead plays, but so does every young player n the league, and many degrees worse on this team it’s like with his defense, people are hyperfixated on every little thing he does
I should follow up, I do think Reed makes a few more turnovers than I like when forced to pass to KD. Not sure if this is a Reed thing or an Ime thing, but it looks like when KD iso or KD PnR is called, Reed does not have the option to do anything but pass the ball to KD, even if the defense is completely geared to stop that pass or swarm KD after he receives the ball. He would probably be a low-turnover player without having to force these passes.
That's a two way street though. Stats also can make people overlook things. I get it that we are all human, and in the end its all about the final product you put on the table. However when you see things that are obviously glaring weaknesses in his game, having an eye ball test isn't always the worst thing in the world to balance with the final product. As I've said many times... I think he needs to start, and play alot. I also do know a little bit about basketball having played my entire life to know that he has a shaky handle, and needs ALOT of work on that in the offseason. I see a shooting guard in a point guards body who needs to be developed into having passable point guard ball handling skills & intuition because he's not big enough to play the shooting guard position long term as a starter. He's going to get more criticism to develop his handle because he is the THIRD pick in the draft which comes with a high salary and high expectations, and because the Rockets REALLY need someone who can do what he's capable of doing offensively for their system to work. Dude needs alot of work. The Rockets need him to get better. I don't know why people look for stats to make a case that he is this amazing ball handler and defender that anyone with two eyes that has played basketball at a high level can see clearly. I think people take the scrutiny the wrong way. I don't waste my time talking about JD Davison, Tate, and Holiday. Reed is important... and he's gotta get much better.
He needs less work than almost everyone else we've drafted. If we're using the eye test. Entry passes to Durant have always been a problem regardless of who is passing him the ball. That's what happens when youre a twig and can get bumped off your spot. Durant needs to be spoon fed the ball and everyone from Reed to Sengun to Amen struggle with getting him the ball from time to time. His defense is a work in progress and it's still bad. He gets lost defensively and still struggles to remember where to be offensively. Thats just reps and lower body strength. He is built well. This isnt Jalen Green who had the lower body frame of smaller Durant. Reed is stout and once he gets his legs where he needs them he'll have that tree trunk thing of being hard to move. Truth of the matter is that Reed is what we hoped Jalen would be. He's an incredibly underrated athlete (athletic but white) and has begun to catch opponents with hesi crossovers a ton. Once he gets over his "I have to make sure Josh Okogie gets this 3 pointer" crap and just pulls up then we'll all be better for it. He has work to do but the biggest issue with Reed right now is Ime Udoka and impatient fans that want him to be Jalen Brunson *today*.
Because he's the third pick in the draft and the Rockets REALLY need him for what they want to do for the near and long term future to work. People need to stop being so sensitive about it and understand that its actually a good thing that he's nit picked. He's really fcking important and it would be a huge blow to the team long term if he didn't work out. You don't see people all worked up about Isaiah Crawford. Its a good thing people have higher expectations of him just as it was a perfectly fine for people to nit pick Jeremy Lin after the Rockets signed him to be a big part of their future, and he had issues as well that were holding him back from realizing those expectations.
Nobody said he's an amazing ball handler we just refuted your argument that he is a turnover machine. And while he does make some bad turnovers he also is the one who consistently sees passing lanes and makes passes that make me say "wow"
I watch the games. It is not a glaring weakness. Stats have nothing to with it. Lots of people watch the games. You are not the only person that watches games. You are in the minority of eyeball tests that think Reed Sheppard is a turnover machine. Stats say he's not a turnover even if you don't believe the stats. Stats can make people overlook things. My eyeball test is that people who dismiss stats often make biased decisions and just assume others aren't watching the games. Thats said, turnovers are countable and a stat. You can argue on handles or passing ability as stats are not good at quantifying these. There are 12 eggs in a dozen, and a player has to have a lot of turnovers to be a turnover machine by definition. Shake your fists in the air all you want about the evils of stats, but turnovers are quantifiable by stats. Not sure how an eyeball test can be believed over stats in this case except for blaming the eyeball test of scorers. This isn't to say Reed doesn't need to work on handles or defense.
O m I think we'll agree that he does make some bonehead passes, but to say a turnover machine is simply hyperbole.
I don’t know the best way to manage the rotations, but I really want to see Amen and Reed on the court at the same time. They are intended to be our long-term backcourt and really seem to have a good synergy when on the court without Durant and//or Sengun. Amen has been setting much better picks lately and Ime has been doing film studies with him on that skill. A Reed/Amen PnR could be really good with Sheppard on the ball. Amen’s decision making has been improving all year and he is making those decisions much quicker. He is a good and willing passer. I’d really like to see a lineup of Amen, Sheppard, Durant, Tari, and Jabari at times and get away from the ISO spamming. I think having Durant and Sengun on the floor at the same time is much more of a problem offensively and defensively than having Amen and Reed on the floor at the same time.
