Fansided is one of the worst websites in the world. 99% of their articles are trash. Sanchez has 2 years of control and projects to put up about 2-3 fwar during that time, during which he'll make ~$15M. So he has about $15M in surplus value. Loperfido has 5 years of control, but his projections vary greatly. The only projection system that projects him over a full season has him at 1.7 fwar, which incidentally matches Sanchez's highest projection, but generally over a full season his projections would be in the 1-2 fwar range, so over 5 seasons, he'd be worth 5-10 fwar. Even at the low end of that range (making ~$20M over 5 years putting up a total of 5 war, for a surplus value of ~$30M), he'd have far more surplus value than Sanchez. And that doesn't factor in the additional money Toronto is paying via the CBT or what Houston does with the money they cleared.
A better source but no grades. The Toronto beat writer for the Athletic. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7044552/2026/02/13/blue-jays-jesus-sanchez-trade-analysis/
do we expect loper to be here long term or is astros looking to trade him again soon? of course, who could forget his insane catch back in 2024
Joey was actually projected to be in AAA. Toronto has a much deeper roster of position players, even with Santander's injury. Maybe he would have received a ring for playing in a couple dozen games after an inury until replaced by Santaner ir in a deadline deal. But his path to significant playing time improved, even if only from 25% to 50-60% chance at 250+ PAs.
If Loperfido starts the season as 14th or worse healthy position player on the 40 man roster it probably means Houston had a really good spring.
At 14th best, does that mean he's the 5th outfielder and starting in AAA? Where would you say Sanchez was in the pecking order?
Ironically, I think that catch is what got him traded. That was awesome. I mean i wouldn't have let it fall out of my glove*, but he did what he had to do. *mainly because i would have been about 2 1/2 feet short of the ball at full extension. : )
