One way to ease up the glut and save some money. Probably gonna end up a salary dump and nothing more. The under the surface numbers for Loperfido are still terrible, and he wasn't particularly good in AAA. If one wanted to be an optimist, he did improve his K rate to a still high but passable number in his time last season. He is flexible enough that the possibility for a solid platoon option is there. Sanchez was terrible here, and he's really not fun to watch. However he has a long track record of hitting RHP fairly well, and I suspect he will do it again this season.
Maybe this gives enough salary relief that they bite the bullet and absorb some of Walker's salary to deal him? In a vacuum I would like to keep both Walker and Paredes, but don't see a realistic path. Walker again yesterday said "I am an everyday player" Joey has defensive ability and versatility Sanchez doesn't. He has options and he's cheaper. And Joey adds another backup 1B so there isn't pressure to keep Dezenzo on the roster if Walker or Paredes are traded. The Blue Jays needed a sub for Santander who they lost to injury. Jesus could be great in Toronto. This is a very good trade for everyone except Taylor Trammell.
I like for many reasons: Money to spend somewhere other than the bench Younger More upside More position flexibility Options if he struggles in role
I think the 1B part is bigger than most think. I'm guessing a Walker trade will be made today, Joey not only offers a backup 1B but he is a good defender in the OF as well, and can hold his own vs RHP which is very important for us right now
If we are not paying part of Sanches salary Im bit suprised somebody was willing to take him. Maybe the good hitting coaching (small sample) in Toronto can help him. It will cost them like 14m with luxury tax. https://jayscentre.com/forums/topic/97982-dave-popkins-appreciation-thread/ Atleast on that forum most people are happy and some even asking why Astros would do this. Maybe this is understanding that Rogers have more $ than God and trusting process after getting to WS. They were from r**ard baserunning from IKF away from being the champs. Not expecting much from Loperfido, everything upside there. If the money now available will help upgrade then great, just happy it was not for Framber or JV deals. Overall I just hope we would have a team 2026 fighting for each other, have accountability, have great storylines and be competitive. We have great pitching department but also would be so fun to see new guys on hitting side get somebody on track or shining brighter.
I really think Sanchez is a guy who when you haven't watched him much, you just look at his numbers and he doesn't look bad. Remember, his sample size here in Houston was extremely small But when you actually watch him play on a daily basis, you don't cry about him being gone
Actually, we traded Bloss, Wagner and Gusto for Kikuchi and Sanchez rentals (neither were used in the post season) Not a huge loss
Maybe Loperfido was brought in to add to another trade. Like swapping Marvin's Gardens for a Railroad before sending that Railroad as a package deal for Boardwalk. Sure Marvin's Garden's looks better but the guy holding Boardwalk already had Railroads.
When his dumb behind did that whole chicken scratch thing in the box, I was done. While your name might be Jesus, you are no Soto. You couldn’t carry his jock strap. Don’t do that stupid stuff on the Astros. It impressed me as a supreme lack of awareness and intellect (like Pedro Guerrero type stuff). I felt then he wasn’t a good fit. I’m glad I wasn’t in charge of managing him (they never asked; would have considered). Welcome back JoLo! We are somehow better albeit marginally.
From the Jays perspective... i disagree with their take though. https://fansided.com/mlb/mlb-trade-...e-penny-pinching-astros-in-jesus-sanchez-deal
I don't follow their logic. Loperfido is a better fit as a bench bat. He's more versatile and cheaper... Toronto picking up Sanchez hoping he's a starter in place of Santander. Far more likely Sanchez fails at that than Loperfido as a depth guy.
