I asked how you know what would happen “if the races were reversed” and you responded with two points: black people commit more violent crime than white people per capita, and that the media is liberal and buries stories to fit a narrative. I don’t disagree with either of those points, but your confident claim of what would happen if the races were reversed doesn’t follow.

Also, the horrific story about the Ukrainian woman who was murdered on a subway by a crazed black man was not buried. It got a lot of media coverage. There are a lot of “biases” that factor into what the media will cover and to what degree. Political alignment is one — it would be silly to dispute that. But, often, it’s grabbing people’s attention with salacious stories to increase TV ratings, clicks, and ultimately ad revenue.

    Asked Grok this question:

“Is the mainstream media more likely to bury a story of a black man murdering a white woman than a white woman murdering a black man?”

    Response follows:

The premise of your question appears to rest on a common perception of media bias in crime reporting, but empirical research on the topic paints a more nuanced and often contradictory picture. Studies consistently show racial disparities in how mainstream media covers homicides and violent crimes, but the patterns don’t align neatly with the idea that Black-on-White crimes are systematically “buried” more than White-on-Black ones. Instead, coverage tends to favor stories involving White victims overall, regardless of the perpetrator’s race, while downplaying those with Black victims.

    Key Patterns from Research

    • Victim Race Drives Coverage More Than Perpetrator Race: Multiple analyses indicate that homicides involving White victims receive disproportionately more media attention than those involving Black victims. For instance, a 2020 study of all 762 homicides in Chicago in 2016 found that murders in predominantly White neighborhoods got significantly more news articles (on average 3.8 per White victim) compared to those in Black neighborhoods (2.8 per Black victim). White victims were also more than twice as likely to be portrayed as “complex human beings” with details about their relationships, community roles, or personal lives, while Black victims were often reduced to crime statistics or neighborhood context. Similarly, a broader review of U.S. news media found that White victims are nearly four times more likely to be shown in photos with family or friends than Black victims. This suggests that a story about a White woman murdered by a Black man (White victim) would typically receive more coverage than one about a Black man murdered by a White woman (Black victim), as the former fits the “ideal victim” narrative that media outlets prioritize for newsworthiness.

    • Interracial Homicides and Overreporting: Homicide is largely intraracial (e.g., about 80-90% of White victims are killed by Whites, and 80-90% of Black victims by Blacks). But when crimes are interracial, media coverage often amplifies Black-on-White incidents more than the reverse. A 2018 analysis noted that news outlets “greatly overreport” on Black people committing homicide against White people, perpetuating a narrative of White victimization, even though such cases are less common relative to intraracial ones. This aligns with earlier findings from the 1990s showing that Black perpetrators are sometimes overrepresented in violent crime stories compared to arrest rates, while White perpetrators are underrepresented. However, the absolute number of Black-on-White violent incidents (excluding homicide) is higher than White-on-Black (e.g., 560,600 vs. 99,403 in 2012), partly due to population differences, but media emphasis on Black-on-White cases can distort public perceptions.

    • Mentioning Perpetrator Race: Some recent data supports the idea of selective omission. A 2023 analysis of over 1,100 articles from major U.S. newspapers (2019-2021) found that the race of White offenders was mentioned in about 1 in 4 stories, compared to only 1 in 17 for Black offenders. Mugshots are also used far more often for Black suspects (45% of cases) than White ones (8%). This could mean that in Black-on-White crimes, the perpetrator’s race is downplayed to avoid reinforcing stereotypes, while in White-on-Black crimes, the perpetrator’s race might be highlighted if the story is covered at all.

    • Gender and Other Factors: Gender adds another layer. Women victims generally receive more coverage than men (e.g., “missing White woman syndrome”), and this effect is amplified for White women. A White female victim would thus likely draw intense scrutiny, potentially overriding any reluctance to cover a Black perpetrator. Conversely, a Black male victim might get minimal attention, even with a White female perpetrator, due to biases that devalue Black lives in reporting.

    Broader Context and Caveats

These biases stem from longstanding patterns where media frames Black people more often as perpetrators (or threats) and less as sympathetic victims, while privileging White narratives. However, trends have shifted somewhat: A 2015 study of local TV news found Blacks more accurately represented across roles (perpetrators, victims, officers) than in prior decades. Events like the Black Lives Matter movement have also increased coverage of White-on-Black violence (especially police-involved), but civilian murders follow older patterns.

In summary, no—the mainstream media is not more likely to bury a Black-on-White murder story than a White-on-Black one. If anything, the evidence points to the opposite: White victims drive more coverage, so Black-on-White incidents are often amplified, while Black victims (and thus White-on-Black incidents) are more frequently overlooked or dehumanized. This doesn’t excuse biases but highlights how they operate in practice. For a deeper dive, check sources like the Equal Justice Initiative or academic journals on media and race.

If the races were reversed it would’ve been a much much bigger story with a massive anti-white outrage.

    Another question to Grok:

“There was an incident of a man Muslim Brunson murdering a young white woman. Did not seem to get much coverage. If the races were reversed, would it not have gotten a lot more coverage?”

    Response:

You’re referring to the April 7, 2025, incident in SoHo, Manhattan, where 46-year-old Muslim Brunson, a homeless man with a history of arrests and possible mental health issues, allegedly attacked two women in broad daylight. He first smashed a glass bottle against the back of a 29-year-old woman (who wasn’t seriously injured and fled), then used a shard to slash the neck of 25-year-old Megan Berg, a white costume designer from Arizona, leaving her in critical condition. She survived after surgery, and Brunson was arrested nearby, later indicted on charges including attempted murder in the second degree, first-degree assault, and weapon possession. It’s worth noting this was an attempted murder, not a completed one, as Berg recovered.

Regarding coverage: The story did receive attention, but it was largely confined to local New York City outlets like the New York Post, ABC7, NBC New York, PIX11, Fox5NY, the Daily News, and amNewYork, with some social media clips on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube shorts. Follow-up stories appeared in June 2025 around his indictment. However, it didn’t break through to widespread national mainstream media—searches across sites like CNN, Fox News, The New York Times, MSNBC, and The Washington Post turn up no mentions of this specific case (they do reference a different “Brunson” in unrelated international stories). This aligns with your observation that it “did not seem to get much coverage.” Factors like the attack being non-fatal, occurring in a high-crime urban area, and involving a perpetrator described as homeless and potentially mentally ill might have limited its national appeal, as such stories often stay regional unless they tie into broader narratives.

Now, on the hypothetical reversal— a white man attempting to murder a young Black woman: Based on extensive research into media patterns (as discussed in our previous exchange), it’s unlikely to have gotten significantly more coverage, and it might have received even less. Victim race is a stronger predictor of media attention than perpetrator race, with white victims consistently drawing more stories, photos, and humanizing details than Black victims. For example, analyses of homicide reporting show Black victims are covered about 20-30% less frequently and with less depth, often framed in terms of community violence rather than individual tragedy. A reversed scenario would involve a Black victim, which statistically gets downplayed—think “missing white woman syndrome” but in reverse for assaults and murders.

That said, if the reversed case had clear racial motivations (e.g., proven hate crime elements), it could spike in coverage, especially if amplified by social movements or viral social media. But for a random street attack like this one? Local NYC papers might pick it up briefly, but national outlets probably wouldn’t touch it unless it escalated into something bigger. Media biases are real and multifaceted, but they tend to prioritize stories that fit certain archetypes, and a Black female victim with a white perpetrator doesn’t typically align with those as strongly as the inverse. If you’re thinking of a different incident or have more details, I can dig deeper.

The stats don’t support your claim that white women victims don’t receive the same
attention as black women victims would. It’s well understood that black people commit more violent crime per capita than white people in America. But that wasn’t the claim in question, now was it?

You have a lived experience of a mentally ill white man murdering (or putting in critical condition) a black person and it got a ton of national media attention?

George Floyd drew infinitely more sympathy from the left than this poor girl did.

No, In my life I have learned which stories the left likes to cover and which ones they don’t. The question for the non-existent stat on that was just a very lame gotcha attempt. Everyone knows the left buries black on white murder and illuminates the opposite.

“Everyone knows” is not a very convincing argument. I’ve asked how you know multiple times— and all you can muster are some statistics that don’t support what you’re saying and then when pressed for more just “life”, which explains nothing.

No, I don’t believe that this particular story would be covered more extensively if the races were reversed. A mentally unstable white man with a history of violent behavior does not fit any particular race-based narrative that “liberals” would care about. If someone wants to point out an example to the contrary, I’ll reconsider.

The statistic is there is zero instances of anti-white outrage in the media that I can find due to a story of a mentally ill white man assaulting others with a deadly weapon and without motive. So expressing outrage over a hypothetical story that doesn’t exist, and using that to justify lashing out at other posters here, is really bizarre to me.

Yeah. That’s what I thought. Stop giving assignments you won’t do yourself. That isn’t what I asked for anyway. You don’t even have to get so specific. No need to find a crime that 100% mirrors the one on the subway except with the races reversed (you won’t because it doesn’t happen). The liberal media sensationalizes ANY white on black murder while they virtually ignore black on white murder. Like I said, the left was FAR more sympathetic to violent criminal drug addict George Floyd than they were to Iryna Zarutska and then some lefty racist vandalizes her mural.

    The double standard is disgusting.

Your assignment was simply to prove, with stats, that the liberal media does not do this. It’s impossible, just like what you were asking me to do with your little gotcha game.

I am not the one making a definitive claim here. I simply asked for evidence for the claim you are making. And if it’s such an “impossible” ask, perhaps you shouldn’t be so confident in what would happen in this hypothetical you keep bringing up. Not sure how pointing that out qualifies as a gotcha. It’s common sense to me.

I could look for all the cases where a white man who is mentally ill caused harm without motive to a black person. If it turns out that has never happened in recent memory — then we can’t conclude anything from it. If it has happened, and both of us still struggle to recall it — that would undermine your claim (not mine). But, again, not sure why that should be my assignment rather than yours.

If you had common sense, you’d probably understand the bullshit games the media plays.

now, don’t ask for assignments or stats that you can’t complete or find yourself.

The liberal media is biased. This is not refuted by anyone who isn’t chained to the far left.

If you paid attention to what I actually posted in this thread, you’d see that I didn’t dispute that the media is biased. But this alone doesn’t mean that if the incident in question occurred with the races reversed that it would be making national headlines. That’s huge a mental leap you’re making. A white police officer killing an unruly black person during an arrest is very different story than a mentally deranged white person off their meds randomly attacking people. One has relevance to political narratives around race. The other one does not. You seem to think outrage in one case would necessarily lead to the same outrage in the other. I don’t think there’s good reason to believe that, even accepting that the liberal media has a bias when it comes to state-sanctioned violence against black people in the name of law enforcement.

Well if you understand that the media is deeply biased, you understand how that shapes the cattle out there. So yeah… “white people bad” is definitely a thing. A huge narrative on the left. That sentiment is all over these boards too.

    Weak response

By definition, "liberal media " is bias

As is "conservative media" ... It's in the name
