Reed only got "cooked" once in this entire video... and it was in the same way that Tari and KD were "cooked" later at the end of the video He looked worse many more times than this. I'll be honest, Reed is going to have his defensive issues, but he's getting better at leading his player to the help defense. The problem in this video is that his help defense was Alpi... When it was Adams or when it's Bari or Capela it's better. I'm curious to see what Will sees in theMavs game. I haven't rewatched it yet as I'm packing to head to Indy to watch the Rockets-Pacers game in person on Monday.
He was quite terrible... Some of these defensive possessions, it's like not even an NBA player, but some dork kid.. Reminded me of those Grant Hill Sprite commercials from the 90s... Too bad, a good kid, just doesn't have NBA body
It's too bad we couldn't have gotten this out of the way last season. If only we had competent coaching.
I actually think Reed is pretty much ready to be a starter minus a lot of muscle and a little polish on his handle. Problem is that takes time. I don't know if just one more summer is enough to bulk up. Might need a couple. Otherwise perfectly good player in a good role. As a 6th man, he'll do 6th man things. That includes nights where the shots don't fall. It includes some defensive lessons. In that role we can absorb it. I think his shots would be much easier with the starters and his 3's would make so much more difference to our overall offense. Sengun Durant Tari Amen Reed That's an energetic 1/2/3 with 3 guys shooting over 40% for the season from 3. I really want to see whether the defense would be as bad as people predict.
Reed has unfortunately dropped below 40% from 3. He’s at 39% now looks like. Hopefully he will get out of the funk soon because the team sorely needs his shooting.
He missed all his 3s, but had a few nice middies. That midrange pull up should be his signature shot, like CP3. He should use his threat of 3 to force the defender to close out and pump fake for the blow by to the midrange space. His defense was pretty bad. No excuses.
He’s taking a lot of bad shots and passing up good ones it’s absolutely maddening as someone that defends him. What generally happens is: has good open shots, but wants to get teammates involved so passed them up (stupid when it’s capela or amen ) Team goes on a drought and realizes he needs to score. Our offense gives no good looks and often a well defended 3 he doesn’t get set in. Also I’m not liking his energy, it’s timid, weak, and looks like he’s ready to move on
Haven't had time to organize my notes yet, but I can tell you they're full of solid to good defensive plays from Reed. I think I counted 3 blow-bys (need to check that) and yeah that sucks, but you have to evaluate it in the context of his total performance, like a shooter taking a lot of shots and bricking 3. Reed does get targeted on defense, so the denominator is large. His arms are short, which impairs him and us. That's just a fact. Tari or Amen can lose a step on an attacker and still recover to swat it. Reed can't, he's just cooked and that's that. And that's one of the things that make him a net defensive liability. But when you evaluate him in terms of doing what he can with what he has, defensively, this was a good game for him. Film at 11.
I heard a lot of the stupid narratives about that other small guard “cooking him” but I agree with this I saw maybe one or two plays. And the rest of the team had plenty of those
I agree with the "rookie wall" comments, he's currently played nearly twice as many minutes as he did last season and significantly more than he ever has even in college. On top of that, he is playing in a system that isn't a system...that has no structure whatsoever. I think he'll be fine in the long run, but there obviously will be stumbles along the way.
That was more than once. The first 4 of 5 plays was Reed getting lost. SMH. I dont understand what people are seeing? You go under the screen to give the offensive player the jumpshot. Drop coverage is to give resistance to stop the drive until the defender that was screened recovers. If they dont, they switch to the taller player. Yes Alpi is just as guilty, but Reed was standing in no man's land and did nothing to switch to Kornet or attempt to get back in front of his man.
Yeah, this is an area where I'm the least qualified person to judge. I watch these games with my eyes focused on one player. So I'm not focusing on the bad on-ball defense by other Rockets. When Reed is off the court, sometimes I notice other defenders getting hosed. It probably happens a lot more than I'm seeing. The problem for Reed is that in the NBA you start to get a reputation, and then other teams try to exploit it. Reed's reputation is worse than his actual performance, but the reputation itself becomes a problem, in that he gets targeted. My defense of Ime, regarding Reed, is that Ime is very aware of the reputation problem and wants Reed to do what he can early in his career to mitigate the reputation so he won't be constantly targeted.
Reed simply isn’t ready for the role he has to play for us to be successful. We can either choose to compete this year by making a trade to get a starting SG or just use this as another development year and continue to give Reed 25-30mins a game. It’s unpopular, but I think he is 2 years away from having an NBA body if he commits to putting on the necessary muscle. I personally think Reed’s ceiling is a sharp shooter off then bench, which is a valuable role and worth hanging on to.
There IS a system and a structure, just one that’s all over the place, and the team struggles mightily to execute it. At times, the whole team looks stuck in the mud, as if they’ve never played together. Other times, it seems like half the team is running one play while the other half is running something completely different. With a young team, a new PG, an ISO-master, and a flex center, I guess with that many moving parts, that’s kind of what you get.
Kind of, maybe. Honestly it comes across as a 5 year old just smashing his toys together and calling it a system. Also, they don't run a PG at all most of the time. With the starting unit you have an athletic forward who wants to pretend to be PG, a center who wants to be PG, and an old star SF who wants to be PG with everyone trying to do things differently as best to suit their preferred style of play which is different than the others....and that leads to a lot of trash ISO BS. Sometimes the parts fall together in a good way, but it seems almost accidental when it does. IMO they need a real coach who can organize this mess and provide real direction and structure rather than just letting the players figure it out on their own.
I know they teach defense at Kentucky and I ultimately think Reed should have stayed there for 4 years. Until he learned fundamentals of defense. I watch everyone on defense. I watch to see who's the first person to break the string. It's usually Alpi or Reed when he's in the game. Then comes Jabari, Kd, or Eason the 2 young ones gamble a lot. Kd is 37 so, there's that. I think everyone else is solid most of the time.
One bad reach on Flag which rightfully got him sent to the bench. Other than that just missing 3s and a baseline middy.
