I was researching Sir Francis Drake yesterday as a friend of mine in Cali said they changed the name of his high school from Drake HS to something else.

In 1562, the West African slave trade was a duopoly dominated by the Portuguese and the Spanish. The Spanish and Portuguese were aggrieved that the English had entered into the slave trade. The Englishman Hawkins allied himself with two local African kings in Sierra Leone who asked for help against their enemies in exchange for half of any captives they took. Attacking from both sides, they took several hundred prisoners, though the kings kept "the larger share of slaves and dared Hawkins to do anything about it".

They were a Mande people, likely the Mandinka who established themselves in the area around Guinea in the 16th century

The Mandinka are the descendants of the Mali Empire, which rose to power in the 13th century under the rule of king Sundiata Keita, who founded an empire that would go on to span a large part of West Africa. In the mid-16th century, the Mane or Mandinka people invaded, subjugated nearly all of the indigenous coastal peoples, and militarised Sierra Leone. The Mane soon blended with the local populations and the various chiefdoms and kingdoms remained in a continual state of conflict, with many captives sold.

There was a lot of this going on. Black Africans capturing, selling and enslaving our brothers and sisters.

The Moors & Berbers traded millions of white European slaves, too, so maybe you can hate them less. Slaves were termed as coming from three different zones in Christian Iberia: Galicians from the northwest, Basques or Vascones from the central north, and Franks from the northeast and France.

Trade ties between the Moorish kingdoms and the North African Moorish state led to a greater flow of trade within those geographical areas. In addition, the Moors engaged sections of Spaniards and Portuguese Christians in slave labor. The Moors used ethnic European slaves: 1/12 of Iberian population were slave Europeans. For example, in a raid on Lisbon in 1189 the Almohad caliph Yaqub al-Mansur took 3,000 female and child captives, and his governor of Córdoba took 3,000 Christian slaves in a subsequent attack upon Silves in 1191. In the Almohad raid to Evora in Portugal in 1181–82, 400 women were taken captives and put for sale in the slave market of Seville. The governor of Córdoba, in a subsequent attack upon Silves, held 3,000 Christian slaves in 1191.

The Mandinka history is kind of similar to how the Comanche immigrated from over a thousand miles away and moved into the Southwest U.S. while displacing the Navajo and Apache through warfare and violence and setting up the Comanchería empire, but that is a different thread I guess.

Sir Francis Drake decided to ally with escaped slaves from Spanish ships in the Caribbean (cimarrónes- maroons) who themselves would attack early Spanish settlements (this time specifically in Panama). Drake paid wages to an escaped slave named Diego to be part of his crew, essentially becoming first mate. They sailed up the Pacific Coast of South America and Mexico, attacking Spanish ports all along the way (England & Spain were at war.) They eventually landed at current day Point Reyes, Marin Co. California in 1579 and had contact and friendly relations with the Miwok tribe.
