Matt Damon as an American Odysseus in ancient Greece is a choice I guess. Still, I like looking at Anne Hathaway so will watch.

I was going to write something similar but thought nobody else would agree or care. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm sure it will be a beautifuly composed and shot movie, (with Nolan trademark difficult-to-understand dialog) and I have nothing against Damon, but I'm going to have trouble with him in this role.

It's not that you necessarily need a Greek actor, but maybe someone not so identifiably American to play a Greek legend. Plus, we've been conditioned over many decades to expect that Ancient Greeks and Romans speak with an English accent.

    We'll see how it goes.

I can't think of anybody currently with the right age and the star power of Damon off the top of my head, and Im sure the latter was ultimately the deciding factor for the studio.

I get why he's the guy, just doesn't work for me. If I googled I could probably come up with a better fit for the character in the book, but I'm sure they wouldn't be the marquee name that Damon is and I also get that 99% of the audience won't know/remember the first thing about the Odyssey and won't care.

I've read literature from that time period---Odyssey, Antigone, Sophocles.
The translations aren't always written in stilted English to make it seem noble. So they didn't necessarily speak as if they "s*** marble" (Mozart's line from "Amadeus").
However, lacking the posh British accents so often employed for Greeks, Germans, Italians, et al, yes, it'll be different. As long as Odysseus doesn't bellow, "F***, I stubbed my toe, god**mnit!" we should be okay.

    Understanding the cast and director.

My expectation is that this one is going to be a banger.

I hope it's as good an adaptation as "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"

I was picturing Galifianakis and Mantzoukas headlining a Chris Nolan historical epic.
