It is very mainstream with those under 35 - especially amongst males and some conservative females. The line of reasoning is basically that Hitler just wanted to save and preserve the German culture and heritage from the rest of the world. That concentration camps by Hitler and Himmler were intended to house the Communists to prevent them from engaging the Nazi's and that the number of Jews in the camps were actually quite small, and that the USA and Great Brittan had POW camps, and that is similar to gassing and burning Jews. So, Hitler is really no worse than FDR or Truman or Churchill or any other world leader and that the high ranking Nazi's should have been released post WWII.

It is worse than that -- there is no amount of evidence that will lead them to condemn a movement or group of people that they have bought into. They simply do not care if the behavior is deserving of condemnation, because they have already bought into the propaganda - and propaganda doesn't rely upon facts, it relies upon the heart.... which is why the Democrats get no where harping about how many laws that Trump has broken. We are past this - they believe that Hitler was no worse than any other ruler, that all of his decisions and actions were to protect his people and to fend off attacks from those that wish to destroy the German people. It is the same reason that poor whites in the South would go to the grave cursing blacks and the North - and never cared that the ruling white class in the South was largely responsible for the poverty of whites in the South. Emotion runs strong, and prejudice and hatred is a convenient out for expressing troubles and anger. It depends on the circumstances - in most cases they defend the ruling class, and policy makers -- be that in the USA or Africa or South America... they blame the poor, the different and the marginalized. Racism is an outlet - it lets the justify their behaviors and feelings........ brown people, Asians.... non Christians, they are REAL Americans....... right now MAGA is laying low on black people, but they - like white women - will eventually be scapegoats because the masses always need some marginalized group to blame other than admitting they were bamboozled by the people they gave power to. In America these same folks like 150 years ago wanted to round up all the black people that had been in America for 3-4 generations, and put them on boats and ship them to Africa and forget them. That didn't happen in part because business realized they could pay black workers less...... then it was that they wanted all the black people to live on the other side of town, where they were hidden when they were not working on cars or in kitchens ...... then some of the blacks became highly skilled laborers........ and then these groups of whites decided that they would have their own white unions, and push out the blacks and make sure they could not either own property or vote....... then when Jim Crowe fell apart --- places like Chicago and the West Coast forced all of blacks in poverty to live in housing projects....... and then when those were made illegal, these folks said that black men were all dangerous and did not deserve to be humanized, and all black women were undesirable and would make nothing of their lives. The bar keeps moving - but the point is the same, to marginalize and to dehumanize-- be it women, black Americans, Mexicans, the poor or homosexuals--- there always has to be a few whipping boys for society to **** on.
