The Wizards continue their awful habit of overpaying for guards (see also: Beal, Brad; Wall, John).

TY’s value plummeted when he returned to the court.

I think it makes sense for the Wizards with their young core for several seasons. It would definitely be a mistake to give Trae a no trade clause and a mistake to resign Trae after this upcoming contract.

If you know, you know. Also, look at the setup of his roster.

He can make Precious look like a star in any given night, or he has to battle diva status in Zach with a proven killer in DD.

His job is safe and he's a great human. Players respect him, including Russ who rarely listens to any coach

We're talking about the guy coaching the team with the worst net rating in the entire league right? A guy who makes silas look like prime pop? This is one of the wildest and more humorous takes i've seen (if it's satire though well played).

Young has a 1 year player option after this one and according to reporting there's apparently no plans to discuss an extension until after the season - how is it an overpay?

Putting a $50,000,000 player on your roster who is a proven loser. Unless they want to ensure the #1 pick, I guess.

They had/have $78 million in expiring contracts in McCollum and Middleton in the offseason; Even *after* acquiring Trae Young, they will still have, in total, $45 million in cap room this summer.

They have zero other PG's on their roster. They're already last in defense, you tell me who the better fit is than a 1.5 year rental of Trae Young? Which $50 million free agent should they be holding out for?

The deal is a home run for the Wizards, literally taking a flyer on a 1.5 year commitment to a 27 YO All-NBA level player? Even if YOung busts out they have no downside.

As I'm sure you already know, DD and Zach had problems with each other in Chicago. Of course, it was mainly because of Zach's ego and difficult personality.

I laughed my head off last year when Zach was traded to Sacramento and rejoined DD to facilitate the De'Aaron Fox trade to the Spurs.

The ONE time I've seen Zach LaVine put his ego in check for team success was for Team USA a few years ago. His head stayed screwed on, he accepted his role of not being THE MAN, was a willing passer, very efficient shooting the ball (as usual) and made a point to play defense.

Yeah - Young is that special kind of bad on defense. The kind where you merge bad physical skills, small size, lack of effort and a complete lack of understanding basic defensive principles.

Trae Young makes Reed Shepperd look like Amen Thompson on defense.

From one bad team to another. In the East, where you just have to fart on the W column to make the playoffs.

There is one upside for Young, though.

The other thing about Trae Young that has historically dragged down his value is his poor shot selection and high turnover numbers. He is not a bad 3P shooter in terms of his actual talent level, but he takes far too many very long threes early in the shot clock, and bricks them at a high rate. It's why his 3P% has bounced up and down over the years, and has generally been below average. It's also what drags down his overall FG% since around half of his shots are threes. Add onto that a turnover rate that has generally been above 4 per game, and he's just not that efficient for a guy allowed to dominate the ball so much.

Basically the overall picture is a guy who has the ball in his hands constantly and is far too willing to make risky plays, both with his shot selection and with his passing, which generates a lot of assists but also a ton of turnovers. It allows him to put up gaudy box score numbers without the actual offensive value added matching the surface numbers.

The version of Trae Young's style of game that reins it in and plays safer and defers as needed is somebody like Jamal Murray, who also brings more size and better defense. So a guy who can be the #2 option and is at the fringe of all-star caliber play. That's a guy you can have on a championship roster. Trae Young, the way he plays right now, is not, IMO. Especially considering his aforementioned garbage-tier defense.

    All true but -

Trae Young was an all star 11 months ago

    And

Who are the wizards filling ~80m of expiring with otherwise?

They had to fill it mind you, just to get up to minimum.

Yeah, it's not a bad move for them, especially since they don't have their draft pick this season, so adding some marginal wins doesn't really matter.

He's not a bad offensive player, he's just not as good as you'd think when you look at his stats and are like "25 and 11, wow!"

The wiz have their pick this season, it's just top 8 protected which they will keep.
