I'm trying to make bulleted lists in Word. Normally when you start a new bullet and tab over, it creates a new bullet indented over (I hope that makes sense) farther than the one above it. However, when I tab over it moves the cursor to the next tab but doesn't indent the bullet farther in.

I've had this problelm before, and never found a way to fix it. Eventually I reformatted my computer and afterwards it worked fine. Now it's switched over again and I don't know why.

did you try the increase ident button on the toolbar -- it seems to work a little more consistently then tab for me

it looks like a bunch of lines on top of each other with a little blue arrow pointing to them

Thanks Geronimo, didn't know that was there.

If anyone knows how to make my tab button work though I'd appreciate it, as it's much faster than having to go press a button everytime.

go to this link for a quick overview of MS tabs:

    http://www.nailitnow.com.au/word/tutorial32002/word3tabslimited.html

After step 29, click on Next to step 30... and so forth

You can also pull down the Format menu and select Tabs to control them precisely.

Or, if you want to manually create a bullet instead of an automatically bulleted list, hold down ALT and then press 0 1 4 9 on your computer keypad (you must do this on the keypad, not the numbers at the top of the keyboard)

I may be missing something all together, but I don't see what that overview has to do with my question. I'm working on a laptop that doesn't have a number pad, so that's kind of out of the question...

Okay - if you use Word's ability to generate a bulleted paragraph, click on one of the bullet items, and look up at your ruler. You'll see that the position of the bullets and their following text is controlled in the ruler by your indention markers (the little gray upper and lower pointy triangles) and by tabs.

And yes, you do have a keypad on your notebook. Look at the bottom left of your notebook's keyboard. See that key that is labeled "Fn" ? It works kinda like the SHIFT key. Notice that Fn is a different color. Now look on your keyboard at the U I and O keys. Do you see the numbers 4 5 and 6 on them in a different color? If you hold down that Fn key and press U, that's the equivalent of hitting a keypad 4. The Fn key also lets you access all the other items on your keyboard that are a different color including monitor brightness, volume, external monitor/projector and more.

What version of Microsoft Worse is that? Usually, the next few steps will allow you to do what you want.

Start with a fresh paragraph (anything that starts after you press ENTER is a new paragraph)

Type the asterisk (*). Spacebar once. Type 'bullet one'. Press ENTER. (At this point, if your "AutoCorrect" options have the "Automatic Bulleted Lists" in Apply As You Type is checked, a bullet will AUTOMAGICALLY appear). Voilá, dotted bullets!

Press TAB. Type 'bullet level two'. Press ENTER. Press TAB. Press TAB again. Type 'Bullet level four'. Press ENTER. Press SHIFT+TAB. Press SHIFT+TAV. Type 'bullet level two'. Press ENTER. Press TAB. Type 'Bullet Level Three'.

You can actually skip levels. Any time you want to end the bulleted lists, have a blank item, and press RETURN. this will return you back to NORMAL mode. The secret is to do the TABs when there is an empty bullet, not when there is something in the item in the list.

If you need to change the spacing the tabs go, right-click on the bulleted list and select FORMATTING. Be careful using the rulers... if you change a ruler setting, this setting will remain for the rest of the bullets. Is this what you want to do?
