Might be the single worst update to a major iPhone app. It’s awful

i took a photo of one of the trees in my backyard yesterday b/c the fall color is spectacular and the photo app correctly identified it as a chinese pistache in the notes. crazy that it not only tags it as a tree, but knows what kind.

but yeah, im not liking the update.

A bit off-topic, but I planted a chinese pistache about 5 years ago to replace a broken bradford pear. It's still only about 15 feet tall, but the colors haven't been that great so far. Some say it depends on whether you have a male or female tree. I've seen some crazy awesome colors out of pistaches around the area, though. Added plus is they're heat/drought tolerant and disease resistant. You should post pics of yours once you get your sorry phone working! :D

mine is almost 7 years old and its just now getting to 18'-20'. it was about 8' when planted in 2018. it seemed to grow pretty slow the first 5 years or so and is really shooting up the last couple years. i love the tree b/c its low maintenance, great fall color and shade. as for colors, ive heard it can be a crap-shoot. some trees are more colorful than others.

mine is a male and doesnt produce those annoying berries. its got great fall color this is not mine, but its the type of color im getting. i also planted a autumn blaze maple a couple years ago. its been struggling in the texas summer and it loses most of its leaves by fall, but the ones that survived are fire-engine red.

Yeah, mine is a female, but they've been known to flip genders from what I understand. Not sure if that's true. I was going to get an Autumn Blaze, too, but the more I read, the more I kept hearing it wasn't the best for North Texas area. There's a tree farm/shop up in Fort Worth called Metro Maples that has a variety that they have a patent on. It's called the Fire Dragon shantung maple This variety is built for Texas heat from what I understand, and if you get lucky, the colors are spectacular. But like all colorful trees, you may need a lot of luck to see the most spectacular colors. I almost bought it instead of the pistache, but they were out of stock when I went looking. Anyhoo... good luck with the tree. :D

yeah, im in austin and the autumn blaze is at the very southern end of its range and with things getting hotter it might not be viable here anymore. i would think you would be better off in north texas with them though. i know they do well in oklahoma.

do you fertilize your trees? i think i remember reading that can help fall colors pop more?

i had planted a shantung maple at the same time i planted the pistache. it died last year though. the extreme heat combined with extreme freezes has been rough on my newish trees. i also dont think i was watering it enough. it was also in full sun. i think the maples need to be in a shady spot later in the day. its a great tree though. mine had these cool red/yellow leaves.
