Bregman killing us. Would love to see:

    Altuve
    Tucker
    Diaz
    Alvarez
    Bregman

    At top.

Leaves us weak after 4 spot

Please stop with the Cabbage, he is more of the same

We need to find a legitimate 1B, or call up Sanchez and play Carantini there. He would be well below average for a 1B, but still WAY better than what we are throwing out there

If they believe Loperfido can do the job then fine, bring him up. But Abreu=Singleton=Cabbage so please no

Until Dana Brown can go get a legit mlb 1B, Carantini needs to play there

And no more Bregman in the 4 hole, quit worrying about hurting his feelings. You want to hit high in the lineup, then don't wait till July to hit

Still not worried but is there a Jose Abreu trade that theoretically makes sense? Hopefully Dana doesn't think the chemistry would be hurt in this scenario. I know we would have to add prospects and/or a major leaguer and $$ but just getting off the contract might be worth it.

Nobody is taking on Abreu to play him. The only way he’s included in a trade is if another team wants to buy prospects but even in that scenario the other team would immediately release Abreu. I suppose it’s possible that a team already committed to rebuilding and somehow thinks they can fix him would take him on and play him in the hopes of trading him again. So here’s a hypothetical:

    Astros get:
    IF Jake Burger

    Marlins get:
    OF Jacob Melton
    IF Brice Matthews
    OF Pedro Leon
    P Forrest Whitley
    1B Jose Abreu
    $17M

The Astros position players have on balance performed like a championship caliber team. They have a combined 121 wRC+ and are on pace for 30 fwar. Their production hasn’t been timely.

Likewise, the starting pitching has also been excellent, on balance. They are on pace for 18 fwar. The bullpen has been terrible in terms of impact on the w/l record. Oddly, the worst performers in terms of underlying stats (Montero and Abreu) haven’t really been the main culprits, and there’s huge gaps between expected runs allowed vs actual run allowed across the entire relief corps; that should normalize.

It’s leverage situations (hitting in close games, pitching in the latter innings) that are the cause of Houston’s crummy record. It’s early enough to assume that is just bad luck, but it could also be poor management decisions in high leverage situations. Something to monitor.

Marlins have <4% chance to make the playoffs. Here’s a hypothetical blockbuster to address all of Houston’s early season issues:

    Astros get:
    1B Luis Arraez
    3B Jake Burger
    P AJ Puk

    Marlins get:
    P Luis Garcia
    OF Joey Loperfido
    IF Brice Matthews
    OF Luis Baez
    OF Pedro Leon
    P Forrest Whitley
    1B Jose Abreu
    $22M

Puk can start until the rotation is healthy then can move into the pen where he was a weapon. Arraez is a star level player to replace Abreu. Burger shifts into Singleton’s role (or is optioned to save service time) in anticipation of replacing Bregman next season. This decimates the farm but keeps the window fully open this season and next.

What is this injury to Abreu you're speaking of?

Astros are idiotic for playing him injured.

The 'tough guy', 'soldier thru it' bs is stupid. It hurts himself and the team.

Teams will pitch around Yordan in this lineup.

Bregman needs the calendar turning May.

You sure you don't want to throw in Yordan to sweeten the deal?

    Altuve
    Pena
    Tucker
    Yordan (or Yordan/Tucker)
    Diaz
    Bregman
    Chas
    Meyers/Dubon
    1B

Brandon Belt is out there unsigned. He's not perfect at all but I doubt it would take much to sign him for the rest of the year.

Maybe they have some concern with Hader, but not pushing him for a second inning last night was kinda weak. However, the only thing that has really irritated me about Espada so far is still playing Dubon over Meyers in CF. That just doesn't make sense to me.

Pffft. None of those prospects are elite. Melton and Matthews are high ceiling/low floor guys who would be in the 5-10 range for most orgs. Leon and Whitley are grade 45 types with red flags and downtrodden stock. You’re basically giving up 2 decent prospects for Burger and throwing in Leon/Whitley so Miami takes on ~$15M of Abreu’s contract.

...and you're trading them all for a 28 yo 1-year-wonder. Pffffft indeed. I used more f's, that's how you know I'm right ;)

Espada said postgame if we had scored Hader would have pitched a 2nd inning, for whatever that's worth.
