A lot of people have tried to excuse what Trump says by saying he didn’t mean it literally. In the lead up to the 2020 election many said that if Trump lost the election he would behave like every other losing president in history and leave graciously.
His COVID response couldn't have been any worse if he had been turned to stone. At least then he wouldn't have been able to spread his BS lies that ended up encouraging his believers to fight against the recommendations and precautions put out by scientists, disease experts, doctors, and nurses.

I do think something is wrong with him, but I also think he is not hiding his true feelings anymore, his base loves the racist rhetoric, they stand by the lies because they are just like him personality and character wise.
