I see it more like he will actually surprise his GM (along with the fan base) by splurging or acquiring something that is a pure luxury that only a contending team can truly afford. In your analogy it would be like suprising your wife with a luxury vacation... or a piece of jewelry. Something she will not buy for herself.
I don’t know that it’s a weird allocation. I think it’s very much a nod to what is needed in the playoffs. Those 3 relievers that will pitch innings will be guys 11-13 on a playoff staff. You don’t need to go deeper than 9. I get not spending on those guys if you think you are good enough to get to the playoffs without doing that because then they are pretty much worthless.

Literally nobody is saying that nor does getting another starting pitcher change any aspect of the bullpen as is (unless Bielak is not needed to start). Looks like blanco will also likely make the roster and his slider is an elite enough pitch to where he could get looks as a middle reliever, even though he’s got a stretched out enough arm to be a starter. so we are really talking about Seth Martinez and Bennett Souza (or comparable possible upgrades to those two).
