Gaza was an important economic and civil rights shithole. While Israeli supporters can try to paint it as otherwise - it was objectively incredibly poor, had horrendous human rights and didn’t even have control over its own borders. Also - Hamas didn’t invade and kill Israeli’s with the idea or belief that they only got that days casualties out of it - anymore than Bin Laden felt the death of 5,000 Americans in NYC was the final tally. Hamas wanted to stir the pot and force at least the Arab world to take sides. At this point we have no idea what the final cost will be.

People in Gaza knew about the tunnels , there’s 300 miles plus. The hostages were held in residential homes , the freed hostages said so. They prepared for this war for a very long time and they must be devastated that the IDF is destroying them.
