I went out with some friends this weekend. When it came time to pay up the recommended tip was on the bill. Since I was paying my friends offered to pay the tip with cash. I zeroed out the tip spot on the receipt and left the cash. I check the credit card this morning and the tip had been added in. It was roughly $25 added on to the credit card and the cash tip was $40. How would you handle this?

First you call your bank and dispute the charge, then you call the restaurant and explain to them why you are disputing the charge. I'd be pissed thou.... Hell nah

    Dispute with your CC company.

Just do a service fee and make it public so you can choose not to dine there.

In addition: Never dine there again.

I had coupons and asked the waiter if I can use them, and he said alright, did not even look at the value on it.

Some ppl are nice, some are not.

Treat it like theft. Talk to the manager/owner and dispute it with the cc company. Make sure you let them know you view this as theft and you are considering filing a report.

I'd call the manager/owner. They can reverse the charge and recharge the correct amount. There's always the possibility that someone stole the cash before the waitstaff got to it, but even then it is still wrong to write in a tip. For future reference, we write "cash" on the tip line whenever we leave a cash tip.

Good recommendation although he did write "0" on the tip line. The fact that they somehow put $25 for themselves would be weird since it would be hard to convert a 0 into 25. I would assume they have to go back to the machine and type in the tip the customer gave them, so could it be that they accidentally saw another receipt and put that amount on the wrong credit card? I'd imagine human error is involved here and OP just needs to go talk to manager, let them know what happened, and if management are reasonable people, they will just give him his money back, case closed. No need to dispute with credit card unless OP does not want to drive from establishment due to convenience.

If you have Chase, dispute it online. They'll credit it back to your account and do all the investigation themselves. They will probably contact the restaurant and want to see a copy of the receipt. When they see the tip line added....case closed. You probably won't even have to talk to anyone.

    Real talk.

They slid the tip in and you didn't feel it; left satisfied.

Return to the restaurant and ask each of the waiters and kitchen staff if they will individually give you $1.50 in order to make you whole.

If this sounds absurd to you, then you should just let it go.
