Here's the breakdown of the Rocket's contracts: https://www.spotrac.com/nba/houston-rockets/contracts/ You can see that KPJ has $15.8M in guaranteed money. If we could just waive him on a certain date and only owe him one million, then only 1 million of his contract would be guaranteed. That's not the case.
finally someone who gets it! Stone gets Tim Duncan and David Robinson in the trade. #Steal GM of the Year.
NBA owners can afford to eat bad contracts. Tillman should be treating this the same way as John Wall’s buyout. If he wants to drag this mess into training camp, I hope he gets eaten alive at media day.
Him being a woman beater actually makes his contract more valuable. His contract will likely be voided for conduct, helpful for teams looking to shed salary
Rockets need to be patient, lets see how he plays in the 1st half of the season.. If he somehow puts up stats and get into All Star selection conversation he can be moved for something good...
Should have seen this coming, and given that they drafted Amen and signed FVV, we had a lot of guards and had an opportunity to sell high on KPJ. This group has been on the losing end of so many trades, at some point people need to be held responsible. We have barely anything to show from trading a still in his prime James Harden, got nothing for Oladipo, nothing for KJ Martin, TyTy, Garuba, Christopher, and KPJ return is going to be the same. We traded away every piece from a contending team and have nothing to show for it other than the picks we got for being so horrendously bad for so many years.
An expiring contract, as is proven year after year, CAN have value. An expiring contract with a couple of 2nd rounders attached = Flexibility and NBA Currency. 100% worth kicking the tires on it. KPJ is NBA toast either way. Bizarre to see it claimed otherwise. Whatever makes Tilman and Rafael Stone the bad guys is the answer for many of you for literally anything.
If anyone is slow, it is the one that compares Amen Thompson to Stromile Swift. “This makes me think back to Stromile Swift. Amazing athlete but severely lacking in BBIQ.” -kubli9 Let’s see how this ages, honey cups…
What the explanation didn't say is that the replacement player/salary is 100% sure much worse than KPJ's. That means the contract is going to be much harder to be traded and the player is not going to be good. Why would any team want to help the Rockets by eating KPJ's salary and give them a good contract/player, not to mention the potential bad press?
no one is going to help the Rockets "eating" KPJ's salary, because that's not what the Rockets trying to do. they're NOT trying to trade KPJ to a team with cap space to "eating" KPJ's salary and take no players back, to save money, NO. the Rockets and the trading partner, both teams will be paying that roughly $15millions salary traded each other no matter what (unless the league void KPJ's contract entirely that's another story). at this point, you can just replace KPJ's name with the term "$15.86mil. Non-GTD" or "$15.86mil. expiring" in a trade. how good the returning contract/player is totally depends on the draft assets this team sending out, KPJ's contract just a matching salary and will be cut immediately after the trade. example: the Wizards is in their "phase 1" rebuilding/tanking, they try to be bad now. they traded Monte Morris for a 2027 second-round pick, they'd take any draft asset for their useful players not in their rebuild plan. Trade proposal: "$15.86Mil. Expiring" + Cash + two second-round picks for Delon Wright + D.Gallinari. or "$15.86Mil. Non-GTD" + Cash + three second-round picks for Delon Wright + M.Muscala (1 extra 2RP because Muscala's contract is much smaller than Gallo's) both teams is going to pay that roughly $15million salary this season ANYWAY. Wright, Gallo, Muscala are all serviceable role players, again the Wizards don't need them now. any draft picks are free for them, just like they traded Monte Morris for a 27' second round pick. for the Rockets, all 3 are expiring contracts so will be easy to move at the trade deadline or let them expires next off-season. Delon Wright is an impact role player, similar to Pat Bev., excellent defense/shooting/play-making combo guard, will be perfect compliment to Amen Thompson on the 2nd unit, and backing up Jalen Green. His expiring contract is easy to be included in future trade at the deadline too. is he "much worse than KPJ's"? idk, but don't compare the returning player to KPJ because you're not trading KPJ as player for the returning player. you're trading the draft pick(s), with a Non-GTD contract as matching salary, for the returning contract/player.
