Bad play design if the C doesnt understand he's covered and the assignments should have switched. LG should have pulled there.
mid that was the coaches call and the ol doesn’t have the ability to change their play at the snap, we have a real problem. That was one of the dumbest schemes I have ever seen. Both 4th down calls were idiotic as well and the first decision to go for it was asinine.
Its a tough situation. The center is usually the "QB" of the OL and makes most of the calls. CJ relays the first portion of the blocking scheme and then the center tells the other guys how to adjust. Hurts to have a rookie there at both C and QB, but it is what it is. I think the guys were just trying to appease the design and forgot some basic principles on this particular play and I'd hate to think that NFL coaches wouldnt have a built in contingency for these guys vs every conceivable front. More than likely just another blown assignment as there were a shitton all over the place. Rewatching the game I didnt spot too many other WTF moments regarding the OL other than guys just being beat due to better defense. Im really hoping to see more quick passing to avoid CJ having to break off and improvise 50% of the time.
C.J did a lot of good things on Sunday and the mistakes he made are fixable, excited about how good he can be
All of the criticism of Stroud's ability, or lack thereof, to process defenses quickly suggests that should not have happened. A confused, slow- thinking QB vs a top tier defense usually produces a plethora of mistakes, resulting in a bevy of incompletions and some unfortunate INTs. Maybe, just maybe, the NFL game is not more than CJ can handle. I shudder to imagine what he will accomplish once he gets bona-fide NFL weapons to work with. Good job, young man!
He probably will do what he did at Ohio State Good QB, but no championships, despite some of the best talent in the country around him.
He drove his team down the field, without his two best receivers, against the eventual champions and put them in position to win the game with a field goal. How is it his fault that his kicker missed it? If his kicker had made it and they go on to beat TCU you’d have a different opinion of him for some reason?
