I think it's all about Maldy's health and how the season turns out for him. If they win the World Series and he feels healthy in the offseason I could see him returning or retiring. If they don't win it then I think he's done. Dusty is the same. I don't see him returning if they team doesn't win. But he could decide to go for a 3-peat if they do, or just retire on top.
in 2019 the league average OPS was .758. In 2023 it's. 733 A .774 hitter in 2023 is equal to an .800 hitter from 2019.
this experienced game calling nonsense seems like such a myth. I can’t believe that many pitchers are insistent on Maldy being their catcher. Just look at the results this year
I forgot just how dominant Dirden looked. I really liked him as Chas 2.0 (the 2022 version). He's been in one heck of a bad slump.
I am the same. I'm still going to complain about it as long as they punt addressing core problems until after the postseason. I really don't want to see Dubon in CF instead of Meyers.
Steering back to minor league stuff... Camilo Diaz hit his third home run of the season for the DSL Blue team.
I don’t know about another ring, but I fully expect with the guys we have returning that we will be winning 105+ games next year if maldonado and Baker are gone. This team, with all its injuries, is on pace to win 92 games this year and the difference in WAR between Diaz and maldonado alone is 5 WAR. Add in having JV all year to replace all the Bielak and blanco starts and what I would assume is better injury luck, plus one more chance to get a LHH platoon bat that isn’t broken like Michael Brantley and I just don’t see less than 100 wins and I’d bet on closer to 110 than 100. Unless injury luck is just terrible again.
Agreed, but I would give Singleton a chance at DH and play Alverez in LF. This is exactly why posters wanted Brown to trade for a bat at the deadline. I would give Meyers a week to see if he can stay hot from his great weekend. But if this doesn't happen then Brown should take a look at Singleton and if that doesn't workout then hopefully Brantley makes it back. If Brantley cant make it back and Singleton/Meyers suck, then I would look at bringing up Barber or Loperfido. Altuve 2B Bregs 3B Alvarez LF Tuck RF Chas CF Diaz vs RHP - C Abreu 1B Meyers/Singleton/Barber CF/DH Pena SS Will Dusty play this lineup on a semi regular basis? Not a chance. Will the Stros miss the playoffs if he doesn't start this lineup 60-70 % of the time? Possibly Sorry, I didn't mean to derail this thread.
Not going to lie, thought I was reading the General Astros thread. Just want to thank you for posting all the minor league updates (as well as anyone else who does). It's greatly appreciated. With respect to Diaz, is there any talk/chat/buzz as to whether he is someone who can stick at SS? I see that he has received most of his innings at SS, just wondering if anyone knows how he is there defensively.
Anthony Huezo hit his first pro home run in the first game of the FCL Astros' doubleheader with the Marlins, which they won 17-10.
Esmil Valencia hit two triples this morning in his DSL game. Alberto Hernandez hit a HR in the FCL game. Both are big bonus international signees having really nice seasons.
The FCL Astros and Marlins combined for 31 walks, which is particularly impressive in a 7 inning game.
Gordon starting tonight in El Paso. Not an easy first outing. Gordon's statcast data from the WBC was not very impressive, so it will be interesting to see what it looks like tonight. He must be doing something to get all those Ks.
I hear he relies on high spin rates to create deception, and generate swinging strikes. It'll be interesting to see how he does to end the year in AAA, he will be playing in some difficult environments during most of his road games. Despite a bad start to the year in AA, he had been pitching really well. Much-earned promotion. Hopefully Kouba is next.
