Mariners also didn't have many veterans on good contracts and spent a lot of capital to make that next step such that it looked like the Mariners would need someone to step up to be lasting. Rangers were expected to be the team that makes the next step after them. Granted, Rangers are playing a lot better than expected right now, but they likely mortgaged some of their future to be better right now.
