Until then we have the worlds most expensive low leverage pinch hitter. Can we put a for sale patch on his uni?
So.. he's still on the team & in the lineup... every game... because he can't just sit and watch the pros do it.... ooooo-kayyyy. Guess we all deserve a participation ribbon sometimes. Straight up d!ckhead if you dont go to your boss and tell them you need to take some time off to get your head right...
If only it wasn't one of the universe's biggest mysteries for a manager to conceive that thought or apply that principle.
How does a dude lose ALL of his power so quickly? Is he hiding an injury possibly? It just doesn’t even seem possible.
I highly doubt he just lost all of his power. He’s not in it mentally and is likely trying to over compensate in an effort to correct it and it is just making it worse. He needs to take a week or two off and reset his mind.
Generally when somebody ages out there is some descent. You go from an 800 OPS to 650 not all the way to sub replacement level in the low 500s. I certainly fear he's toast, but this is mental also. He should be bad, not this bad if this is just age.
Do people think Rizzo would have accepted the contract that Abreu got? I think he would have. Rizzo has a club option for his third year, Abreu is fully guaranteed. So Abreu will make at least $7.5M more than Rizzo, and could potentially make $18.5M more than Rizzo. Rizzo's OPS right now is .907. I know it's easy to play Monday morning quarterback and second guess these deals, but this one could go down as an all time foolish deal, really because the difference between Rizzo and Abreu is so significant, and could mean the difference between winning the division a couple more times and making a couple more World Series runs.
From everything that’s been discussed, Rizzo was intent on staying in NY. I don’t think he was a realistic option for the Astros. My guess is the internal discussion was around Yuli, Abreu, and Josh Bell.
Might be the case, I just think $18M more in guaranteed money would have sealed the deal. Maybe the Yanks just would have matched it. And I know Rizzo signed the QO, but it would have only cost the Astros a second round pick. Main reason to me to go with Rizzo would be the age difference. Rizzo is 33, Abreu 36 (if you believe the Cuban birth records).
Over the last week, Abreu's OPS has been better than Bregman, Pena & McCormick. https://www.espn.com/mlb/team/stats/_/name/hou/split/61/table/batting/sort/OPS/dir/desc
That's more of a statement of how the others sucked than Abreu getting better. I think we have less patience because his history of greatness was not in an Astros uniform. If he would have won a MVP here, most of us would say he will eventually snap out of it.
