I actually think the biggest unknown is if he even wants to coach the rockets. Everyone seems to be presupposing he wants to come here. But some coaches don’t want to coach a rebuilding team…especially one as far away from relevance as we are.
You could do worse than Vogel. At the very least he’ll be respected in the locker room. Not really a fan of his offense though.
Vogel is supposedly a defense-minded coach. He did win a championship, but that was kind of on easy mode with a great roster featuring a healthy LeBron and AD against a beat-up Miami roster, in a weird pandemic-shortened season, so I'm not sure how much to credit him. He's a guy who could end up being good, but I could also see him being overrated and the fans really ending up hating him.
I was just reading up on him. From the Pop coaching tree. He’s probably a good coach although his record doesn’t show it. It’s not like the Hornets had much to work with. But feels too risky for me because he hasn’t yet had success as a head coach.
From Stone's presser it just seems like we aren't hiring a HC that hasnt won a playoff series. All of the interviews with coaches not meeting those credentials are for alternative reasons. Griffin to poke and see what Raptors are doing with Nurse, or if we get Nurse will he come. His name also is out there getting a HC interview to boost his own profile. To me its Vogel, Udoka or Nurse. I would be surprised if it is anyone else. Also, it seems like we are moving at a rapid pace and will have the spot filled before potential HC getting fired that are in the playoffs. I think there is a small chance guys like Malone, Bud, Doc, Jenkins are available.
My concern is that it sounds like Borrego is similar to Silas regarding lack of accountability. We don't need another one those coaches around.
Borrego might not be a bad coach. Charlotte was a lot better with him than without him. Though granted, their roster was better (and less injured) last season too. I don't think he could possibly be worse than Silas, and Pop's assistants have a solid track record. I don't know if he'd be my pick, though.
It’s interesting that of the two current vacancies, there doesn’t seem to be much overlap in candidates. Adrian Griffin is the only name I’ve seen mentioned for both teams. I’d like to see them make a move pretty quick before other jobs open up. I also don’t like the idea of waiting for someone to get fired from their current job so you can interview them.
