I'm going to be in Phoenix for a few days - Northeast side, Scottsdale area, to be more specific - in early May. Going out to see family that is sick.

Will have some downtime as well. Any recommendations? I am thinking more hiking/outdoors type stuff, maybe golfing (I suck), and that type of stuff, as well as restaurants.

It'll be me, my brother, and sister (likely with her 8 year old). We all pretend to be grown adults (except the 8 year old).

    Thanks in advance!

Hiking Camelback Mountain was pretty cool. Although, it's a little strenuous, and involves some rock scrambling. There are two trails that go up. The Cholla Trail is the easier one, but it's still difficult. It's not for an 8 year old.

I didn't get to go, but the Desert Botanical Garden is supposed to be pretty huge and popular, and maybe has some areas for kids. Kid might light the short hike to Hole in the Rock at Papago Park, which is next to the botanical garden.

As for not-outdoors things, if you're at all into music then you should check out the Musical Instrument Museum. It's a huge, world-class museum, and by far the biggest in the world devoted to instruments. Has a mix of modern instruments owned my popular recent musicians, as well as historical instruments from all over the world (including the world's oldest guitar). You walk around from headphones and can listen to the musician or a recording of the instrument to hear how it sounds. We spent 3 hours there and didn't get to see everything. I think mileage probably varies depending on the kid, but definitely seems like a place a kid would be pretty interested in. There's a room where they let kids (and adults) play some instruments (string and percussion type).

Last thing that was pretty cool is Taliesin West if you're at all into Frank Lloyd Wright/architecture. You have to reserve a tour in advance.

Awesome. Thanks for all the info.

I think we're going to do a day trip to Sedona as well. Any recommendations up there?

AZ has legal recreational MJ if you're into that sort of thing.

I don't know anything about Phoenix but Sedona is nice.

The Anitabha Stupa is free and nice place to take a little walk and meditate. (its also donation based so not expensive)

The Bison Pot Roast on the dinner menu at the Cowboy Club Grille & Bar is awesome.... but its the priciest Pot Roast you'll ever eat.

Dont underestimate Camelback Mountain! I went middle of the day during the summer with less than a gallon of water and coming off a long night of partying. Its a miracle I am not dead but I made it up. Had to beg people for water on the way down like a peasant. Take plenty of water and then take more than that.

You're correct. I've seen it everywhere and think it'd be cool, but it's kind of far from where I'll mostly be.

Most of my time will be spent over by Mayo Clinic.

    Yeah. Never been before.

Might have made a faux pas calling it Phoenix. Uh oh.
