It's hard to judge Jabari honestly. This offense only allows people who can self create to score. Not much movement off ball. Therefore if you want to score on this team it's off the dribble. Green, Sengun and KPJ can all do that. This team needs to run al lot more DHO combos primarily through these 4 players (Green, Sengun, Bari, KPJ). Just run a bunch of DHOs between those 4 players. That will prevent over dribbling and players getting clean assisted looks. Defenses make a lot more mistakes when you do a lot of DHOs than just beating defenses off the dribble facing up the defender. Jabari can get a lot more clean looks this way.
Usually a rookie will have a time that they will get going with their shot and the game slows down for him, but he just not look like a top rate player in the league. Honestly the guy seem arrogant
Jabari literally shoots terrible from open shots but people still blame the system. He needs to be in the G-League hoisting up 20 3-pointers per game.
What system? there is no system and that's the reason why folks look bad. The silas system is basically shoot if u are open, pass if u aren't. I think when u are new to the job, folks wouldn't mind an orientation or a mentor to guide u and teach the ins and out. Jabari smith first year in the league, he has no vet (eric gordon is checked out), no coach/system, a dude learning how to play pg and a bunch of other youngsters. I think it's quite overwhelming to just give the rookie a sht ton of mins and just see if he can thrive on this team w/o any guidance or just flounder until he gets the flow of things. Could smith just suck? sure, but the franchise isnt doing its best to put him in the best spot to succeed aside from heavy mins
What you said is true. What's also true is he shoots horribly from OPEN SHOTS. He needs to be in the G-League hoisting up in-game 3 point shots.
He isnt gonna learn much playing in G-league especially if the defense is half ass and the competition is a tier below. He might even pick up more bad habits. If we aren't a tanking team, sure send your rookie down to get mins. We are a tanking team, he should b taking shots and learning with his team. I sincerely think he will look much better with an actual coach.
I really feel like asking Bari to take 1-2 steps in and then shoot would do wonders in helping him find his shot.
Was excited about him when we drafted him due to his supposed solid outside shooting & stout perimeter D. 2 base skills that can translate really well to the league from college if improved upon but it's been downhill since then... dude looks awkward/unsure, unable to create good looks, mediocre ball handling & seems have no other offensive skills, to top it off even when he's open it's a brick. I'm not seeing any sort of improvement since the start of the season, if anything he looks worse. Hoping he can turn it around but wooh boy, he has a longgggg way to go
Yeah, our offensive system is a joke, but even when he gets wide open threes he misses them. I do believe that other aspects of his game have improved slightly, so if he ever does get his stroke back he’ll be a pretty nice player, but right now it’s pretty awful watching him struggle out there.
You guys still haven't learned from the cringe Jabari victory laps ya did during his little late November streak huh. Love these overreactions after one game.
That's a weird way to look at it, given that we are one of the teams with the most open looks/uncontested shots created in the league and Jabari having an extremely high assisted shot percentage. If you want to look for a reason for his struggles, open looks are the last thing you should mention.
Jabari should be a lesson for all the draft experts. The trend has been to value player archetype over actual basketball skills which increases the risk of drafting busts with high draft picks. His lack of actual skill is what makes him look so terrible right now because he can't consistently get to the rim or create good shots for himself. The fact that someone like Banchero who has all the skills a basketball player needs was projected to go after Jabari is all you need to know. Jabari is still talented and I've not given up on him but it's been rough.
Except Jabari never got clean looks in college either. He wasnt exsctly spoonfed in college he played with a bunch of crappy guards who couldnt playmake for him and he did just fine. He was called one of the best shotmakers in college cuz a lot of his shots were contested. Everybody has scouted him by now they all know he cant shoot. Teams arent double teaming him in fact they leaving him open most of the time and he still clanks those.
You are talking about 19 yr old prospects skills can be learned along the way in fact skills are lower priority than raw talent and work ethic cuz if the playeris extremely hard working he will acquire those skills over time. Would you pick Banchero over Giannis just cuz Giannis was extremely raw and had little skills when he got drafted?
The problem with that is that Giannis was picked #15, not #3. And yes, I would pick Banchero over Giannis in a draft. Giannis' arc was Impossible to predict and incredibly unlikely. Giannis is 1 of 1 and the fact is that most players who come into the league like Giannis will never end up like him. Meanwhile most players that have fundamental skills like Banchero will be productive players and for a long time.
I would say in college, Jabari's length was even a bigger advantage where shooter over defenders wasn't as difficult as it is in the NBA. Either through strength or more creative ball handling or more agility, offensive players have to generate some space to get clean looks in the NBA. KD is the rare exception even though he has the talent and skill to create seperation off the dribble also. That's just how op he is as a scorer.
